It takes immense strength to navigate grief, and “Today Show” journalist Sheinelle Jones is finding her way with grace. Recently, she embarked on a significant milestone: her first sit-down interview since the passing of her husband, Uche Ojeh, earlier this year. The inspiration for this return? The magic and message of the upcoming film, “Wicked: For Good.”
A Special Interview, A Special Guest
Jones sat down with “Wicked: For Good” stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande during the film’s London premiere. This wasn’t just any interview; it was a deeply personal moment. Not only did she bring her daughter, Clara, along for the experience, but the interview also marked her brave re-entry into sit-down interviews after losing her husband, Uche Ojeh, 45, to brain cancer on May 23, 2025.
Reflecting on the experience in an Instagram post, Jones shared, “I couldn’t think of two better ladies to connect with, and jump back into doing sit-down interviews again.” She also noted how Clara witnessed her mom’s dedication, staying up late to prepare for the conversation.
Finding Strength in ‘Wicked’
Jones candidly shared with Erivo and Grande how the film resonated with her journey through grief. “You guys both know that I am grieving, right? And I carry two things everywhere I go. I move forward, but I’m also grieving,” she explained. The experience of watching the movie was profoundly moving for her.
She found inspiration in the characters’ strength, bravery, and vulnerability. “When I went in the theater to see this movie, it was transcendent for me in a way that I didn’t know I needed,” Jones revealed. “To see these characters be strong and brave and vulnerable. And I’m sitting there thinking, ‘Okay, if these women can do this on the screen, so can I in my own way.’”
Fighting for Joy
This candid conversation about grief is part of Jones’s ongoing process of healing. Back in September, just four months after her husband’s passing, she spoke about how each day is an intentional fight. “If you see me now and you see me laughing, or you turn on the morning show and I’m laughing or having a good time, you root for me because I’m fighting for my joy,” she shared.
Her return to interviews, inspired by the resilience portrayed in “Wicked: For Good,” is a powerful testament to her courage and determination to move forward while honoring her grief. It highlights how art and storytelling can provide solace and strength during life’s most challenging times.
