Laverne Cox is ready to share a deeply personal and challenging chapter of her life. In anticipation of her upcoming memoir, ‘Transcendent,’ the Emmy-nominated actress has revealed a harrowing childhood experience: being left in an orphanage with her twin brother, Lamar.
A Difficult Past, A Powerful Story
Cox, 53, shared with People that after being sent to live with their estranged father by their mother, Gloria, they were ultimately rejected. Their father reportedly called them ‘f—-g freaks,’ and his partner then took them to the police, leading to their placement in an orphanage. This experience, Cox admits, was incredibly re-traumatizing to revisit for her memoir.
The ‘Orange Is the New Black’ star explained that her mother, who raised the twins as a single parent and worked multiple jobs, would often threaten to kick them out. While Cox remembers spending a month in the orphanage, her mother’s recollection is different, stating it was only a week. Thankfully, having her twin brother, Lamar, to corroborate her memory provided a sense of validation.
Art as a Healing Process
This isn’t the first time Cox has used her art to process difficult life experiences. Her Amazon Prime sitcom, ‘Clean Slate,’ explored themes of reconnecting with estranged family and community in Alabama, mirroring aspects of her own life. She found filming certain scenes, like those set in a church or involving a character eerily similar to her mother, to be challenging but ultimately impactful.
Cox believes that sharing lived experiences, especially challenging ones, through art can be incredibly powerful. It allows others going through similar situations to feel less alone, fostering empathy and connection. ‘If you do have lived experiences that are challenging, you can give it to your art,’ she told People in 2025, highlighting the profound gift of transforming pain into connection.
A Voice for the Voiceless
Her memoir, ‘Transcendent,’ promises to offer readers an even deeper look into her journey, resilience, and the strength she’s found in sharing her truth. It’s a testament to her courage and her commitment to using her platform to illuminate important stories.
