Four years after the events of January 6, 2021, the FBI has arrested Brian Cole Jr., a 30-year-old Black man from Woodbridge, Virginia, in connection with the pipe bombs discovered in Washington D.C. just hours before the Capitol riots. This arrest marks a significant development in an investigation that has spanned nearly five years.
Charges and Allegations
Cole faces multiple charges, including “malicious destruction or attempted malicious destruction by means of fire and explosive materials,” as well as “transporting an explosive device in interstate commerce with intent to kill, injure or intimidate or unlawfully destroy property.” According to reports, Cole allegedly planted pipe bombs outside the Republican and Democratic National Committee headquarters in D.C. on January 5, 2021. Thankfully, none of the devices detonated.
FBI Director Kash Patel stated at a press conference, “An individual who is now alleged to have placed multiple explosive devices to blow up multiple people and multiple officials [and] innocent civilians is now arrested.” This arrest is being hailed as a major breakthrough in the ongoing investigation.
Motive and Investigation Details
During interviews with the FBI, Cole reportedly expressed his belief that the 2020 presidential election, which saw Joe Biden elected, was stolen from former President Donald Trump. This admission provides a potential motive for the placement of the bombs, aligning with narratives held by many involved in the Jan. 6 events. Law enforcement recovered items allegedly used to manufacture the bombs, including pipes, end caps, battery connectors, timers, and electrical wire, by examining credit card and checking account statements.
Phone records indicated Cole’s cellphone pinged near the committee buildings on January 5th, and surveillance footage showed his 2017 Nissan Sentra passing a license plate reader in D.C. less than half a mile from where he was initially spotted on foot. Notably, the arrest was made using evidence gathered in 2021 and 2022, leading some, like former acting U.S. Attorney Pam Bondi, to suggest the case “languished” under the Biden Administration.
A Case of Diligent Police Work
Bondi emphasized that the arrest was the result of “good, diligent police work and prosecutorial work,” rather than any new tip or witness. Brian Cole Jr. is expected to appear in court on December 5th. The arrest brings a significant development to a case that has remained a key focus in the aftermath of the Jan. 6th Capitol riot.
