  • 8 Essential Tips for Infant Sleep Safety

As parents, we all cherish those quiet moments when our little ones are finally asleep. But while sleep is crucial for both baby’s growth and your sanity, it’s also a time when certain risks can arise. The good news? Simple, consistent safe sleep practices can make a life-saving difference. Experts from First Candle, in collaboration with Naturepedic, share essential guidelines every parent needs to know.

Understanding the Risks: SUID and SIDS

It’s a sobering statistic: around 3,700 babies in the U.S. die suddenly and unexpectedly during sleep each year from Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID) and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Many of these tragic events are preventable. By adopting a few key practices, you can significantly reduce the risks and give your baby the safest sleep possible.

The Top 8 Safe Sleep Guidelines

Let’s break down the most critical steps to ensure your baby sleeps safely, every single time:

    1. **Always Place Your Baby on Their Back:** Contrary to some old beliefs, back sleeping is the safest position. Babies are better equipped to clear spit-up when on their backs, preventing airway obstruction. Continue this for every nap and nighttime sleep until they can reliably roll over on their own.
    2. **Use a Firm, Flat Sleep Surface:** A safety-approved crib, bassinet, or play yard with a firm mattress and a fitted sheet is essential. Avoid soft surfaces like car seats, swings, couches, or adult beds, as these can pose suffocation risks.
    3. **Keep the Crib Clear:** While cute nursery decor is tempting, babies don’t need loose blankets, pillows, or stuffed animals in their sleep space. These items can accidentally cover their face, hindering breathing. A clear, uncluttered sleep environment is the safest.
    4. **Room-Share, Don’t Bed-Share:** The safest place for your baby is in their own crib or bassinet next to your bed. Room-sharing for at least the first six months, as recommended by the AAP, makes nighttime care easier and provides peace of mind while ensuring your baby’s safety.
    5. **Be Mindful of Dozing Off With Your Baby:** If you find yourself getting sleepy while holding your baby on the couch or in an armchair, immediately move them to their safe sleep space. Accidental suffocation can occur if they roll or are pressed against cushions or your body.
    6. **Keep Baby Comfortable, Not Overheated:** Overheating is a risk factor for SIDS. Dress your baby in a wearable blanket or sleep sack instead of loose blankets. Ensure the room temperature is comfortable for a lightly dressed adult (68-72°F or 20-22°C). A breathable crib mattress can also help regulate temperature.
    7. **Pacifiers Can Help:** Offering a pacifier at naptime and bedtime may reduce the risk of SIDS. It can help keep the airway open and encourage lighter sleep. If breastfeeding, wait until feeding is well-established (around 3-4 weeks) before introducing one. Always use a one-piece pacifier designed for infants and never attach it to the crib.
    8. **Stay Smoke-Free:** Exposure to smoke, both secondhand and thirdhand, is a major risk factor for SIDS and breathing problems. If anyone in the household smokes, they should always do so outside, change clothes and wash hands before holding the baby, and avoid smoking near the baby’s belongings.

    Every Sleep Counts

Whether it’s a nap at daycare, a visit to Grandma’s, or bedtime in their own crib, practicing these safe sleep guidelines every single time is paramount. We know you’re juggling a lot and doing an amazing job. Taking those few extra seconds to ensure your baby is placed down safely is a gift of rest and peace of mind for both of you.
