The holiday season is a time for joy, family, and travel. But for many college students, including those at Howard University, this year’s journey home is proving to be a stressful race against time. With a government shutdown impacting operations and recent flight disruptions, securing a ticket home is becoming a significant challenge.
Navigating Holiday Travel Hurdles
As the holidays approach, Howard University students, like many others nationwide, are scrambling to book flights. Many are booking tickets as early as November, trying to beat the rush and potential disruptions. The urgency is palpable as they aim to reunite with loved ones.
Haley Lucas, a student from Alaska who also visits family in Tennessee, shared her annual countdown to heading home due to homesickness. Her travel plans involve flying from Reagan National Airport (DCA) to Tennessee and then on to Alaska. This year, however, adds extra layers of concern beyond the usual holiday travel stress.
Impact of Shutdowns and Threats
Recent events have significantly complicated air travel. A bomb threat against a United Airlines flight at DCA on November 4th caused a temporary halt to flights. Shortly after, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) implemented flight reductions of up to 10% at high-traffic airports, including DCA.
These reductions were partly a safety measure during the 43-day government shutdown, which left many airport employees working without pay. For students like Jaiden Thomas, the thought of a cancelled flight is devastating. She has plans to travel from Virginia to Georgia and then to Hawaii to see her boyfriend, and with her university housing requiring her to leave for winter break, a cancellation could leave her displaced.
Concerns About Return Travel
While some students are focused on getting out of D.C., others, like Josiah Washington, are more worried about their return journey. Washington plans to visit family in Kentucky before coming back to the district for work. He expressed concern about flying back into D.C., emphasizing the need to be present for his job and income.
Despite these challenges, Howard students are determined to reach their destinations. As they finish their finals and pack their bags, there’s a shared hope that their holiday travels will be smooth, allowing them to spend precious time with family and loved ones.
