This year’s commencement ceremony at Morris Brown College is more than just a graduation; it’s a historic moment! The college is celebrating its first group of graduates since regaining accreditation, a cohort they’ve fittingly named the ‘Restoration Class’.
A Milestone for the HBCU
For the 92 spring graduates, this accomplishment represents not only their personal success but also a second chance, mirroring the institution’s own journey. After losing accreditation in 2002, Morris Brown fought for two decades to restore its status, finally achieving it in 2022. This graduating class is the first to benefit from that hard-won reaccreditation.
One standout graduate, Faith Shamley, embodies this spirit of renewal. She returned to Morris Brown after stepping away in 2019, taking a leap of faith in both herself and the college. Now, she’s set to graduate, continuing a family legacy as her grandfather also attended Morris Brown.
The Power of a Close-Knit Community
Shamley shared how her experience at Morris Brown has been “life-changing,” emphasizing the unique bond formed on the smaller campus. “The president knows me by name; he knows all the other students by name,” she explained. “You’re not going to get that at any other college. So, it’s just a really, really special place to be.”
College President Dr. Kevin James highlighted Shamley’s role as one of the first students to enroll after reaccreditation in 2022. He sees this graduating class as proof of the institution’s “resurgence and a comeback,” noting that instilling faith in each other has made both the school’s and the students’ efforts fruitful.
Looking Towards the Future
Shamley’s academic excellence, evidenced by her impressive 3.9 GPA, has earned her a spot in Columbia University’s graduate program for nonprofit management. She’s excited to pursue her master’s degree while cherishing her Morris Brown degree, a symbol of resilience and a new beginning.
Morris Brown College’s journey is a powerful example of determination and resilience, offering inspiration to other HBCUs facing accreditation challenges. The success of the ‘Restoration Class’ signifies a bright future for the historic Atlanta institution.
