Drake certainly knows how to keep fans on their toes! The surprise drop of not one, but three new albums – “ICEMAN,” “MAID OF HONOUR,” and “HABIBTI” – sent shockwaves through the music world. Now, one of the key collaborators, producer Gordo (formerly known as Carnage), is shedding more light on the whirlwind release.
Speaking with Rolling Stone, Gordo revealed that even he wasn’t fully aware of the extent of Drake’s plan. He initially thought the surprise would be a double album release, not a triple threat! “I knew it was going to be two albums,” Gordo shared, adding, “I didn’t know it was going to be three.”
A Strategy Kept Under Wraps
This detail suggests that Drake, even with his closest collaborators, kept the full scope of his strategy under wraps. It seems Drizzy only shared what was absolutely necessary, adding an extra layer of surprise not just for fans, but for the artists working closely with him.
Gordo, who worked extensively on “MAID OF HONOUR” and contributed to “HABIBTI,” listened to all three albums upon their release. While perhaps not as shocked as the general public, the surprise was definitely felt within the creative circle, making the discovery process as exciting for them as it was for listeners.
Exploring New Sounds on ‘MAID OF HONOUR’
Gordo’s contributions to “MAID OF HONOUR” are significant, featuring on tracks like “Hoe Phase,” “Road Trips,” “Outside Tweaking” (with Stunna Sandy), “Amazing Shape” (with Popcaan), “BBW,” “True Bestie” (with Iconic Savvy), “New Bestie,” “Stuck,” and “Goose And The Juice.” He also worked on “WNBA” from “HABIBTI.”
He described Drake’s experimentation with clubbier sounds on “MAID OF HONOUR,” a process that involved over a year of sending beats back and forth. Gordo praised Drake for his ability to take the initial production and transform it into something entirely new by the time the final tracks were laid down.
Grateful for the Experience
Gordo also expressed pleasant surprise at the diverse range of collaborators featured on these albums, including Sexyy Red on “Cheetah Print.” While he’s now shifting his focus to his own solo music, following up his album “DIAMANTE,” Gordo remains deeply grateful for the experience.
It’s been more than positive, right? So that’s a win right there. That’s literally a win. I’m so, so proud of him. He worked so hard and I’m happy that I’m just a very, very small piece into his legacy. — Gordo
His involvement in Drake’s ambitious triple album project marks a significant chapter, and he’s clearly proud to have played a part in such a monumental release.
