  • Why the Internet Targets Black Women’s Friendships

Friendship is a universal human experience, a source of deep connection and support. But for Black women, especially those in the public eye, these cherished bonds seem to constantly find themselves under a harsh spotlight. Why does the internet so often turn the powerful friendships of Black women into a punchline?

From Protection to Punchline: The Erivo-Grande Incident

A recent example that sparked online debate involved Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande during the Singapore premiere of their film ‘Wicked For Good.’ When a man lunged toward Grande, Erivo instinctively stepped in front of her co-star. What should have been a moment celebrating quick thinking and genuine care between friends was rapidly twisted by social media.

Videos flooded timelines casting Erivo as Grande’s personal ‘bodyguard,’ playing into harmful tropes about Black women’s bodies being solely for protection or service. Erivo herself reflected on the reaction, telling Variety, ‘I just felt like my humanity had been bastardized.’ She pointed out how assumptions about her physique and appearance led to the narrative that she was ‘controlling or protecting,’ a role she believes wouldn’t have been assigned if the roles were reversed.

The Oprah & Gayle Phenomenon: Loyalty Under Scrutiny

This isn’t an isolated incident. For years, veteran journalist Gayle King has navigated persistent speculation about her decades-long friendship with Oprah Winfrey. Despite their clear declarations of platonic love and loyalty, tabloids and social media relentlessly fuel rumors that their closeness must signify something more.

King candidly shared on the ‘Call Her Daddy’ podcast how these rumors, particularly those linking them to her divorce, used to deeply bother her. While she’s reached a point where such noise doesn’t get to her, the fact that such a celebrated and documented friendship still faces such intense scrutiny speaks volumes. It highlights a societal struggle to accept that successful Black women can simply be deeply loyal and devoted friends.

    A Pattern of Dehumanization

The internet’s reaction to Black women’s friendships often falls into two problematic categories: sexualization or mockery. When Black women display visible closeness, protectiveness, or joy with one another, their bonds are either sexualized or turned into a joke. This pattern stems from a deeper societal issue: the persistent refusal to see Black women’s full humanity.

Conversely, if Black women appear distant or reserved, they might face narratives about beef or disloyalty, often falling into the ‘angry Black woman’ trope. It seems there’s no winning when you’re a Black woman in the public eye; closeness invites ridicule, and distance invites criticism.

Refusing to Be Defined by Noise

Both King and Erivo are choosing to address this trend not for sympathy, but to refuse to let online commentary define their experiences. Their willingness to speak out acknowledges the magic and necessity of these friendships, recognizing that a part of every Black girl understands the rarity and beauty of such deep connections.

  • Shaq’s Monthly Tribute to Kobe Bryant’s Mom

It’s been years since Kobe Bryant’s tragic passing, but the impact he had on those around him continues to resonate. One person who deeply cherishes their connection with the Bryant family is Shaquille O’Neal. Shaq has revealed a touching personal commitment: he makes it a point to call Kobe’s mother, Pamela Bryant, every single month.

    A Promise Kept

Speaking with PEOPLE, Shaq explained the motivation behind these regular check-ins. “I always check in on Kobe’s mom. I check in on his mom once a month, make sure she’s okay,” he shared. This thoughtful gesture is inspired by Kobe himself, who used to regularly reach out to Shaq’s own parents before he passed away.

Living in Las Vegas, Shaq finds himself geographically close to the Bryant family, which further strengthens his connection. He also maintains ties with Kobe’s sisters, making these calls a natural extension of their shared history and proximity.

    Understanding Grief’s Weight

Pamela Bryant has faced unimaginable loss, first her husband and then her beloved son, Kobe. Shaq acknowledges the profound pain she must be experiencing. “Their mom has been through a lot in a couple of years, and that takes a toll, and sometimes you just need somebody to just call to check on you,” he stated.

I kind of know what it feels like with the passing of her son, but I don’t know what it feels like to lose a son and a husband, so I’m sure she has a lot of pain that she’s dealing with. — Shaquille O’Neal

While Shaq understands the pain of losing a friend, he recognizes that a mother’s grief for a child, compounded by other losses, is a unique and immense burden. His calls are a way to offer solace and remind her she’s not alone.

    Small Gestures, Big Impact

Beyond just conversation, Shaq aims to bring a little light into Mrs. Bryant’s life. “I just try to make her smile. I just try to do whatever I can, because I know it’s tough,” he explained. Sending flowers is one of his go-to acts of kindness, a simple yet meaningful way to show he cares.

This ongoing dedication speaks volumes about the deep respect and affection Shaq held for Kobe, a bond that, despite its occasional on-court rivalries, was always built on a foundation of mutual admiration and genuine friendship. It’s a beautiful reminder of the enduring power of connection and support.

  • LeBron James Apologizes to Drake

It seems one of the most talked-about friendships in sports and hip-hop might be on the road to recovery. Reports suggest that LeBron James has reached out to Drake with a private apology following their very public falling out earlier this year. This comes after a period of tension sparked by Kendrick Lamar’s diss track, ‘Not Like Us.’

The Betrayal: Siding with an Enemy

For years, LeBron and Drake shared a close bond, often seen supporting each other’s careers. However, things took a sharp turn when LeBron appeared on stage with Kendrick Lamar during the height of his feud with Drake. LeBron hyped up the crowd as Lamar performed ‘Not Like Us,’ a song filled with lyrics directly targeting Drake. For the Canadian rapper, this moment reportedly felt like a profound betrayal.

This public display of support for Drake’s rival sent shockwaves through their fan bases and the wider entertainment world.

    LeBron’s Apology: ‘I’m Sorry’

Now, weeks later, LeBron is reportedly attempting to mend the rift. Sources close to Drake indicate that James has made multiple attempts to apologize. ‘LeBron reached out and apologized,’ an insider revealed. ‘He said it was about his love for hip hop, and he didn’t realize how it could have hurt Drake. He’s sorry, and he wants to try and make it up.’

The apology was reportedly delivered through direct texts to Drake and messages passed along via mutual friends. It seems LeBron is acknowledging that his actions, while perhaps intended innocently in the context of music appreciation, had a deeply personal impact on his friend.

    Drake’s Silence and Fan Reactions

As for Drake’s response? He’s reportedly remained silent on the apology for now. While some fans believe Drake should move past it, citing the nature of hip-hop rivalries, others feel LeBron crossed a line by publicly siding with Drake’s biggest adversary during a heated feud. The sentiment that ‘a real friend wouldn’t do that’ has been echoed online.

    Can the Friendship Be Saved?

Given their intertwined worlds and shared history, it’s possible LeBron and Drake might eventually reconcile. Both are established figures with significant legacies beyond their respective fields. However, the trust has clearly been damaged, and a simple apology might not be enough to fully restore a friendship that once seemed unbreakable.

For now, Drake is focused on his music and upcoming legal matters, while LeBron prepares for the next NBA season. Whether their brotherhood can withstand this public test remains to be seen, but the world will be watching to see if these two power players can stand side-by-side again.

Do you think LeBron James and Drake can fully repair their friendship? What would it take? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

  • 20 Years of Friendship: Lessons in Sisterhood

There’s a profound power in friendship, especially when a friend becomes a sister. Shanique Yates shares her journey of cultivating and sustaining a deep, 20-year friendship with Courtney Jones, highlighting the invaluable lessons learned about navigating life’s seasons together. Their bond, forged in sixth grade and strengthened through distance, personal growth, and life’s challenges, serves as a beautiful testament to the enduring strength of sisterhood.

    The Foundation of Communication

Yates emphasizes that open communication is the cornerstone of any lasting relationship, especially friendship. Early in their friendship, Yates admits to resorting to the silent treatment to resolve conflicts, a habit learned from her household. However, through personal growth, she discovered the power of direct, honest conversation. “The cool thing about having a best friend, is that you can come to her about anything at any time,” Yates shares, valuing Jones’s ability to approach situations with love, grace, and a non-judgmental ear. This open line of communication created a safe space, built over years of navigating disagreements and silly fights.

    Watering Each Other for Growth

Yates acknowledges that growth, while beautiful, can also be painful. As both she and Jones evolved from their middle school selves, their friendship deepened. During their inaugural “bestie solo trip” to Puerto Rico, they reflected on their 20-year journey, acknowledging how they’ve acted as catalysts for each other’s growth. Yates learned the power of speaking up from Jones’s direct approach, while Jones embraced vulnerability through Yates’s emotional openness.

This mutual encouragement has fostered a strong bond where they celebrate each other’s strengths and support each other’s vulnerabilities. Yates notes that while Jones didn’t always understand her “emotional, Scorpio ways,” she embraced that side of herself and encouraged Jones to be more open, demonstrating how friends can help each other grow.

    Navigating Drama with Grace

Yates acknowledges that friendships aren’t always smooth sailing; there will be drama. However, she and Jones have learned to navigate the lows with grace. “We’ve learned how to navigate the lows with grace, truly,” Yates states. While they rarely argue now, they’ve learned to remain neutral and supportive when drama arises within their friend circle, serving as a blueprint for authentic connection without belittling each other. A significant blow-up during a college trip to Florida, stemming from a feeling of not being seen, ultimately led to open conversations that strengthened their bond.

    Prioritizing Fun and Faith

While deep conversations are important, Yates emphasizes the necessity of carving out time for pure fun. Their travels, from teen parties to international trips, are filled with joy and laughter, embodying their philosophy: “Life is hard enough, why waste it being sad or bored?” This commitment to shared enjoyment keeps their inner children gleaming and their connection vibrant.

Finally, Yates highlights the foundational role of faith in their friendship. Their shared relationship with Christ, nurtured through church visits and virtual Bible studies, provides a spiritual anchor. Yates believes their friendship was “God ordained” to allow them to support and encourage each other’s growth into the women they are becoming.

  • Saucy Santana Defends Yung Miami Amid Diddy Backlash

Saucy Santana is never one to shy away from speaking his truth, and he recently sat down with Carlos King to discuss his close friend Yung Miami and the backlash she’s faced, particularly concerning her past relationship with Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs. Santana feels Yung Miami is long overdue for an apology and is hurt by the negative attention she continues to receive.

Santana Defends Yung Miami Against ‘Hate Train’

In a candid clip from the interview, Santana expressed his frustration with what he calls a “weird Caresha hate-train.” He noted that the criticism directed at his friend, especially now with Diddy’s legal issues surfacing, is particularly hurtful. Santana recalled an interview where Yung Miami stated that her experience with Diddy was different from others, a point that seemed to be dismissed by many.

“Jane Doe said, ‘I was jealous…of her. She wasn’t like us, she didn’t get treated like us,’” Santana shared, referencing allegations made against Diddy. “We told y’all that in the ‘Caresha, Please’ interview… that wasn’t her experience. But…it wanted to go over everybody head.” He questioned why people are critical of Yung Miami for celebrating her partner, suggesting it’s a common behavior: “Who ain’t braggadocious about they man? It’s [what] every girl is doin’.”

Fans Show Support for Santana’s Loyalty

The interview clip quickly garnered attention on social media, with fans flooding Carlos King’s Instagram comments. Many praised Santana for his loyalty, with user @lachante_carrigan writing, “He is a great friend!“ and @kan.disaa adding, “I love me some Santana. A true friend🤞🏾🩷.”

However, some users questioned the need for an apology, asking, “Apology for what exactly?” Others acknowledged Yung Miami’s own statements, like @prissygirlbebe who commented, “Although it wasn’t her experience. She was aware of his abuse towards them.. reason why she made the ugly comments. Good friend though to support her.” Ultimately, many echoed Santana’s sentiment that Yung Miami’s personal experience differed from the allegations surrounding Diddy.

    Yung Miami’s Past Statements

Back in August 2024, Yung Miami herself addressed the noise surrounding her connection with Diddy in an interview with Saucy Santana. She clarified that she wasn’t Diddy’s “cheerleader” but that he was “on brand” for her at the time, meeting him during his “Love era” when he was receiving widespread praise. She questioned why she’s now being criticized for supporting someone the world was celebrating, stating, “I can’t speak on something that wasn’t my experience. And, I can’t speak on something I don’t know.”

  • A Love Letter to the Group Trip Planner

To the friend who’s always in the group chat, sending flight deals, researching room blocks, and making sure the Partiful invite looks perfect – this is for you. You’re the itinerary queen, the unofficial travel agent, the one who curates the vibes down to the Canva flyer and the perfect playlist. You care about the experience, the memories, and the sisterhood, even for the friend who always complains. You are the glue holding it all together.

The Unsung Labor of Trip Planning

Planning a group trip is no small feat. Statistics show that a significant percentage of adults find travel planning stressful, and nearly half wish they spent less time on it. If you’re the one handling everything from booking to budgeting, skimming TikTok reviews, and silently panicking when payment reminders are met with “I’ll pay you Friday,” you’re performing emotional labor. Labor that often goes unacknowledged and unshared.

It’s easy to start questioning if you’re doing too much, wondering if your desire for a smooth, well-coordinated trip is excessive. But spoiler alert: it’s not. You simply care about creating a memorable experience for everyone. It’s okay to set budgets, plan in advance, and send follow-up messages for payments, especially when you’ve booked things weeks ahead.

    Navigating Friendship Dynamics and Finances

The reality is, maturity in friendship involves respecting each other’s time and finances. It’s not about pocket-watching, but acknowledging that everyone has different financial situations, PTO limits, and anxieties. A trip can be soured by someone who didn’t plan, didn’t save, and then develops an attitude. The “Zelle fugitive” – the friend who always forgets to pay for the rental car or split the dinner bill – is a common trope. Different spending expectations can lead to money drama, especially when some want luxury on a budget or view paying back as optional.

In today’s world, with services like Afterpay and Klarna making purchases more accessible, the commitment to a trip should be clear. If friends can’t commit financially, it’s important they communicate that directly rather than leaving others to chase them down or risk their own credit scores. Remember, travel involves more than just flights and accommodation; it includes budgeting for outfits, glam, excursions, and more. Prioritizing your peace and finances might mean traveling solo sometimes.

The Value of Solo Travel and Supportive Friends

Solo travel is increasingly popular, with a significant percentage of women opting for vacations alone. Sometimes, taking a trip solo is the best way to ensure the experience aligns with your expectations and budget, especially when group dynamics become challenging. It’s about preserving friendships by avoiding conflicts over trip planning and finances.

Shout out to the friends who understand and support your efforts, like your college roommate who wisely advised, “Sometimes it’s not that your friends don’t love you. They’re just broke! And that’s okay. Find some rich friends as a backup…” This sentiment, while humorous, highlights the reality that sometimes, financial constraints impact group participation. Ultimately, this letter is for the planner, the organizer, the one who keeps trying even when faced with ghosting group chats or last-minute excuses. You’re not doing too much; you’re doing what needs to be done. Here’s to you, the spreadsheet-wielding, reservation-making, unmatched-patience-having friend.

To all the itinerary queens out there: we see you, we appreciate you! What’s your best tip for managing group trip planning? Share in the comments below!

  • ‘Love Island’ Stars Chelley & Olandria Bond Over Braids

Season 7 of Peacock’s “Love Island USA” delivered some of the most talked-about TV moments, placing its Islanders at the center of pop culture conversations. Among the breakout stars, Chelley Bissainthe and Olandria Carthen navigated the fame and the harsh online backlash often directed at Black women in reality television. The best friends recently spoke with Teen Vogue about their journey in the villa and the enduring strength of their friendship.

    Addressing Unfair ‘Mean Girl’ Labels

Following their time in the villa and ahead of the Love Island reunion, Chelley and Olandria shared their shock and disappointment regarding the online backlash they received. They were unfairly labeled “mean girls” after holding controversial cast member Huda Mustafa accountable for her actions. “It was confusing and so weird because we knew who we were in that villa,” Chelley told Teen Vogue. “We know how much we showed up for every single person on that island… So for us to come out of the villa and see that we’re mean girls, we’re like, ‘Mean girls where?’”

Chelley expressed frustration at the double standard, questioning why they faced criticism for speaking their truth and holding others accountable, while similar behavior from others went unaddressed. “How dare you guys say something like that to us, but not to everyone who was having that mean girl energy or mean girl moments? It goes back to the whole, you have to act a certain type of way [as a Black woman] because the moment you act ‘out of character’ you’re done,” she explained. They emphasized that their actions were about accountability, not name-calling or aggression.

    Navigating Stereotypes and Finding Support

Olandria added that the unfair narrative was exacerbated by fellow Islanders who, after leaving the villa, further fueled the bullying accusations. “To see our fellow Islanders playing into that narrative was hard,” Chelley recalled. “It’s like, you knew us, why would you get out and let America, let social media get to your head?”

Olandria highlighted the pressure Black women face to constantly manage their emotions in the public eye. “They use a moment of weakness and make that one specific time our whole character. I knew that when it came to my emotions, I had to dial that back… The moment that I did break and I kind of blew, people were like, ‘I knew it. That’s the real her.’ I wanted to be unapologetically me, but it’s like this world doesn’t allow Black women to do that.”

    A Friendship Meant to Be

Luckily, they had each other for support. Both Chelley and Olandria had been approached for the show in previous seasons but felt that being cast together in Season 7 was fate. “We’re soul sisters for a reason,” Olandria told Teen Vogue. “We’ll always say to one another, ‘God knew we needed each other.’ I’m so happy the past seasons did not work out for us because season 7 was the year to be here at the same time.”

Their bond was immediate, with many favorite moments revolving around their hair. Both opted for braids to manage the Fiji heat and the show’s challenges. “I think one of the biggest things for us is when we both walked out, got into the villa, and looked at each other and we’re like, ‘Oh, we both got braids,’” Chelley recalled. Olandria added, “On our off days, Chelley and I would be on the floor crocheting my hair, looping my braids through [to freshen them up]. We didn’t have anyone there to braid our hair.”

This shared experience over hair, something deeply understood within the Black community, was a key factor in solidifying their friendship. “That was just a moment of like, ‘Yo, you’re my girl. You know you’re stuck with me, right? You’re not going anywhere,’” Chelley said, with Olandria adding, “My girl—we are in it for the long haul.”
