  • Mielle Organics Connects With HBCUs

Get ready, students! Mielle Organics, a beloved brand known for its commitment to natural hair care, is bringing its expertise directly to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with its “MiCurl Out Homecoming Tour.” This exciting initiative aims to tackle hair care challenges faced by students and foster deeper connections within these vibrant communities.

    Investing in Culture and Community

The tour kicked off its second stop at Florida A&M University (FAMU) on October 17th, with plans to visit a total of four HBCUs. At its core, this tour is about more than just product promotion; it’s about equity and authenticity. Omar Goff, president of Mielle Organics and a proud FAMU alumnus, highlighted the brand’s mission to not only show up but to actively invest in these campuses.

Goff pointed out that HBCUs often miss out on crucial brand support, and this tour is a deliberate effort to change that. “HBCUs are such a pivotal part of culture, and as brand leaders it’s important for us to stay connected to culture but also to pay respect to culture,” he shared with FAMU online. This commitment reflects Mielle Organics’ dedication to serving “underserved and underrepresented” communities.

More Than Just Products: Education and Experience

The impact of the tour is already being felt. Crystal Moulton, a fourth-year public relations student at FAMU, mentioned that the activation encouraged her to explore and try Mielle Organics’ products. “My conversation with the people who were running the activation pushed me to start supporting Mielle and giving more of their products a try,” she said.

Mielle Organics is also emphasizing the importance of staying relatable and true to their roots while embracing new youth culture. This philosophy ensures that their efforts resonate authentically with the students they aim to serve. Following the FAMU stop, the “MiCurl Out” tour is set to continue its journey to other HBCU campuses.

What to Expect on the Tour

Future events on the tour promise a rich blend of product education, hands-on beauty-care workshops, and community-focused experiences. Mielle Organics has a history of supporting HBCU athletics, including partnerships with FAMU Cheer and Howard University’s swim team, further demonstrating their broad commitment.

  • FAMU Seeks $375K Grant for Nursing Program

Florida A&M University (FAMU) is set to pursue a substantial grant to further strengthen its nursing program. The university’s Board of Trustees has unanimously approved a request to apply for $375,000 from the LINKING Industry to Nursing Education (LINE) Fund. This funding aims to expand the program’s reach and enhance student opportunities.

    Grant Proposal Details

The proposal, submitted with a September 1 deadline, outlines a strategic allocation of the requested funds. A significant portion, $300,000, is earmarked for scholarships for students within the School of Nursing. An additional $55,000 would support crucial faculty development initiatives, and $20,000 would be dedicated to student leadership opportunities, including professional development at national nursing conferences.

This grant application is a collaborative effort with HCA Florida Healthcare, building upon their existing contributions to FAMU, which include providing access to clinical rotations at their Tallahassee-area facilities. The partnership underscores a shared commitment to addressing the growing demand for trained nurses in Florida.

    Addressing Florida’s Nursing Shortage

The need for qualified nurses in Florida is critical. The Florida Hospital Association reported over 16,000 nursing vacancies in 2024, with a double-digit turnover rate of 17.6%. The LINE Fund specifically aims to incentivize partnerships between nursing schools and healthcare providers to help fill these gaps.

FAMU’s School of Nursing has demonstrated consistent improvement in student outcomes, notably increasing its NCLEX pass rate by over 10%. Currently, 93% of FAMU nursing students pass the NCLEX, significantly exceeding the state threshold of 75%. This success rate has risen from 82% in the previous academic year.

    Investing in Future Healthcare Professionals

The proposed funding would further enhance the program’s existing strengths, including financial support, mentorship, and leadership training. By enriching instruction through faculty workshops and expanding clinical placement options, FAMU aims to produce even more highly skilled nurses.

Florida State University is also considering a similar nursing grant proposal, highlighting a statewide effort to bolster the healthcare workforce. The success of FAMU’s application could provide essential resources to support student retention, faculty growth, and clinical training, reinforcing FAMU’s legacy of preparing future healthcare leaders.
