  • Nicole Murphy’s Barter Black Empowers Entrepreneurs

In a world where Black entrepreneurs often face significant hurdles, Nicole Murphy is stepping up to create a powerful solution. After experiencing personal setbacks, including job loss and business closure during the pandemic, Murphy founded Barter Black. This innovative platform is dedicated to rebuilding the spirit of Black Wall Street by fostering community and collaboration among Black entrepreneurs.

From Setback to Solution: The Genesis of Barter Black

Murphy’s entrepreneurial journey began in 2014, but the pandemic brought unforeseen challenges, leading to the closure of her company by April 2020. This experience prompted a crucial question: ‘Why aren’t we—Black people—helping each other more?’ This inquiry sparked a pivot into the tech world, leading to the creation of Barter Black.

Built by Black entrepreneurs for Black entrepreneurs, Barter Black merges cutting-edge technology with the strength of community-driven bartering. Murphy’s mission is to dismantle the barriers that hinder Black businesses from scaling, with a primary focus on the critical issue of funding.

    Addressing Key Barriers to Success

Murphy highlights that Black female business owners receive less than one percent of venture capital funding. Recognizing this reality, Barter Black offers an alternative path to growth. It serves as a comprehensive resource where entrepreneurs can save money, access expert services, and find a supportive community—all in one place.

Community is not just a buzzword for Murphy; it’s a foundational principle. She strongly advocates against gatekeeping, stating, ‘We have to rely on each other.’ She draws a parallel to the original Black Wall Street, envisioning Barter Black as a modern ecosystem where Black entrepreneurs can truly thrive.

The Power of Community and Sustainability

The importance of community was powerfully demonstrated when Barter Black temporarily closed for six months in 2024 for a much-needed revamp. During this period, members stepped up to provide the services Murphy needed, showcasing the platform’s core values in action. Murphy admits the decision was ‘scary,’ but the thought of doing it alone was even more daunting.

She encourages Black women to embrace asking for help, emphasizing that while they excel at many things, doing everything alone can create self-imposed limitations. This philosophy extends to sustainability, the third major barrier to Black entrepreneurial success. Murphy stresses the need to hire help to build long-term businesses, which is often hindered by a lack of funding.

    • Barter Black aims to rebuild Black Wall Street through community and collaboration.
    • Founded by Nicole Murphy after facing business closure during the pandemic.
    • Addresses key barriers: lack of funding, limited community support, and sustainability.
    • Offers a tech-driven platform for bartering, saving money, and accessing expertise.
    • Emphasizes the importance of community and mutual reliance among Black entrepreneurs.
    • Promotes personal and business sustainability through accessible services and wellness programs.

Murphy also champions personal sustainability, recognizing the reality of burnout. Barter Black integrates wellness programs and accessible services to support entrepreneurs as whole individuals. Future plans include expanding partnerships for higher education access, Barter Bucks credit, and app tours, further enriching the entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Nicole Murphy’s vision for Barter Black is inspiring! What are your thoughts on this community-focused approach to entrepreneurship? How can we better support Black-owned businesses? Share your ideas in the comments below!

  • Black Women Entrepreneurs Face Trump-Era Hurdles

Black women are a powerful force in entrepreneurship, consistently showing resilience and innovation. However, the current economic climate, marked by instability under the Trump administration, is presenting formidable obstacles to their growth and long-term success. Prominent figures like Pinky Cole, founder of Slutty Vegan, and Fawn Weaver, creator of Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey, are finding themselves restructuring their businesses to safeguard their legacies amidst public scrutiny and high-stakes setbacks.

    Economic Hurdles for Business Owners

The current economic landscape poses serious challenges for business owners across the board. Unemployment remains a significant concern, with Black Americans facing a disproportionately higher rate of 7.7% compared to the overall rate of 4.4% reported in February. Simultaneously, persistent inflation continues to inflate operating costs, making it increasingly difficult for businesses to maintain profitability.

Rising prices for goods and services, increased labor expenses, and ongoing supply chain disruptions are forcing many small business owners, about 46% of whom cite inflation as a top concern, to raise their prices while grappling with tighter profit margins. This economic turbulence creates a particularly precarious environment for ventures striving for expansion.

Pinky Cole’s Journey Through Financial Strain

Pinky Cole, founder of the popular vegan burger chain Slutty Vegan, recently shared insights into the difficulties following her rapid expansion to 14 locations by 2022, a period coinciding with the pandemic’s peak. This aggressive growth, coupled with soaring operational and overhead costs exacerbated by inflation, led to significant financial strain and a complex legal situation.

Cole relinquished ownership of the company in February 2025, only to regain control just 43 days later. She filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Georgia to restructure over $1.3 million in debt, including substantial amounts owed to the U.S. Small Business Administration and the Georgia Department of Revenue. Cole explained that rapid scaling, without proper positioning of talent, contributed to the business’s pressure.

Navigating Legal Battles and Regaining Control

To manage her debts, Cole utilized an Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors (ABC), a process allowing for more efficient liquidation of assets. After regaining ownership, she faced further challenges when a creditor seized her rental property. Despite not owing money on it, the property was locked down due to extended vacancy. Cole ultimately prevailed in court when the creditor failed to appear at a federal bankruptcy hearing, resulting in the property’s return and the creditor being ordered to cover her legal fees.

This experience, while stressful, provided Cole with valuable lessons about the intricacies of business processes. Her resilience in overcoming these hurdles underscores the determination often required for Black women entrepreneurs, who, despite being the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs in the U.S., frequently face limited access to capital and legal resources.

Fawn Weaver’s Fight for Uncle Nearest

Fawn Weaver, the visionary behind Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey, is navigating her own set of legal and financial battles. Weaver recently secured a significant victory in her dispute with lender Farm Credit Mid-America, which had accused her and her husband of defaulting on over $108 million in loans. These allegations had led to a court-ordered receivership in 2025.

However, Weaver announced the receivership’s termination following decisive legal action. She, along with her husband and the company’s largest shareholder, has filed a lawsuit alleging the lender engaged in a smear campaign by spreading false claims about the company’s finances, despite possessing contradictory records. Weaver has assembled a team of ten attorneys to pursue litigation.

    Transparency and Resilience Amidst Adversity

Like Cole, Weaver also filed for Chapter 11 protection to reorganize debt while safeguarding stakeholders. This process ensures continued operation and allows the company to address legal disputes while pursuing counterclaims. Weaver emphasized that Chapter 11 mandates complete financial transparency, stating, ‘In that courtroom, no one gets to hide behind filings without evidence or accusations without proof.’

Despite the ongoing legal battles, Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey continues to thrive, remaining one of the fastest-growing whiskey brands and earning numerous awards. Weaver’s success demonstrates the resilience and determination of Black women entrepreneurs who are not only carving out space at the highest levels of business but are also succeeding despite significant adversity.

  • Krystal Hardy Allen: Travel as Wellness for Black Women Leaders

In a world that often demands constant output from Black women, especially those in leadership roles, finding ways to recharge and reconnect is crucial. Krystal Hardy Allen, a prominent leader and entrepreneur, has found a powerful solution: intentional travel. For her, stepping onto a plane isn’t just about escaping; it’s a sacred act that represents possibility, freedom, and a vital component of her wellness and leadership strategy.

    Travel as Sacred Freedom

Growing up in Selma, Alabama, a town rich with history, Krystal has a deep understanding of the historical context for Black women navigating the world. She describes travel as a sacred experience because it symbolizes a freedom that wasn’t always readily available. Before each flight, she prays, reciting Psalm 91 for assurance and safety for everyone on board. This ritual allows her to fully embrace the experience, whether exploring a new destination or deepening her appreciation for a familiar one.

For Krystal, travel shifts her perspective from one of limitations to abundance. She finds God in nature, new cultures, and the sheer wonder of global transportation. It’s a reminder that life is bigger than daily responsibilities and that joy and curiosity are as vital as ambition for a thriving leader. This practice helps her shed the weight of expectations and return home feeling renewed and better equipped to handle her many roles.

Refilling the Cup: Travel as a Leadership Strategy

As a CEO, Krystal’s days are packed with meetings, speaking engagements, strategic planning, board governance, and supporting others. While she cherishes her work, she’s learned that constant giving without refilling leads to burnout. Travel has become her intentional way to replenish her energy and perspective. It provides the necessary distance from daily demands, allowing for reflection and clarity.

She emphasizes that self-care and wellness aren’t afterthoughts but intentional practices woven into her year. Many of her most innovative ideas and clearest insights have emerged when she’s been away from her work. This allows her to lead from a place of clarity rather than exhaustion, benefiting not only herself but also her husband, family, clients, and the communities she serves. Travel is, therefore, a crucial part of her wellness strategy, enabling her to thrive as a Black woman in a world not always designed for her holistic well-being.

    Global Sisterhood and Deepened Identity

Krystal’s travels, including profound experiences in places like Egypt and Switzerland, have deepened her connection to faith, legacy, and identity. Standing in ancient sites reminds her of her place in a larger historical narrative and inspires her to build a meaningful legacy that will endure. These moments foster stillness, deepen her faith, and strengthen her identity as a Black woman by highlighting the global reach of Black history and influence.

She believes that rest, luxury, and exploration are not indulgences but necessities for Black women leaders. Historically, Black women have carried immense burdens, often taught that rest is optional. Krystal advocates for embracing softness, joy, and quality time with loved ones as forms of restoration. This approach allows for healing, reclaiming what history has tried to deny, and leading from a place of wholeness and inspiration.

    The Power of Traveling Together

Traveling with other high-achieving Black women amplifies these benefits. Krystal describes these journeys as sacred spaces where powerful women can laugh, share stories, reminisce, reflect, and heal together. It’s a reminder that they are more than their titles and responsibilities. This global sisterhood involves encouraging each other to rest, celebrating wins, and holding space for challenges, reinforcing that they are not alone on their journeys.

Experiencing different cultures and ways of life expands leadership and creativity. Krystal returns to her work with fresh ideas, renewed energy, and a bolder vision, inspired by the diverse approaches to life, art, education, and leadership she encounters globally. Travel reminds her that the world is vast and that there are countless ways to build systems, lead people, and create impact.

Meet Achanty, also known as @achanty.t on social media. With a physique that looks like it belongs on a magazine cover – toned, lean, and sporting impressive abs – it’s hard to imagine she once weighed 250 pounds. Her journey wasn’t just about shedding pounds; it was a profound transformation that helped her overcome struggles with self-image, depression, and unhealthy eating habits.

    From Revenge Body to Self-Love

Achanty confessed to Black Women Losing Weight that her initial motivation was to achieve a “revenge body.” However, as she delved deeper into fitness, her perspective shifted. “The more I learned about fitness, the more I began to love it and started doing it for me,” she shared. “I wanted to work on being a better me.”

Her starting weight was a significant 250 pounds, and through her dedicated efforts, she reached an incredible 130 pounds. But the transformation didn’t stop there; she then gained about 10 pounds of muscle weight, further sculpting her physique. This impressive 120-pound weight loss is a remarkable achievement.

    The Foundation: Diet and Consistency

While many might assume exercise was the first step, Achanty revealed that her diet underwent a drastic overhaul. She adopted a meal plan involving smaller, portion-controlled meals every 2-3 hours, cutting out sugary foods entirely. Her current approach includes carb cycling, daily vegetable intake, and pairing proteins with various other foods. Crucially, she preps all her meals in advance, a strategy that keeps her on track.

When it comes to exercise, Achanty works out daily, mixing cardio and weight lifting. However, when she first began, her focus was solely on cardio. On average, she dedicates six days a week to her fitness routine. This consistent effort is key to maintaining her results and building strength.

    Achanty’s Advice for Aspiring Transformations

For those embarking on their own weight loss journeys, Achanty offers simple yet powerful advice: “Do it for you and remain consistent. Don’t give up!” She emphasizes that progress isn’t always immediately visible. “Sometimes you’ll feel yourself changing before you see it,” she noted. • Tabitha Brown: Social Media Success Story

Imagine being told that to succeed as an actress, you should stay away from social media. That’s exactly the advice Tabitha Brown received early in her career. Thankfully, she chose a different path, one that leaned into her authentic self and ultimately changed her life forever. Today, she’s a beloved actress, social media sensation, and successful entrepreneur.

From Uber Driver to Viral Sensation

Just over a decade ago, Tabitha Brown was driving for Uber to make ends meet while pursuing her acting dreams. Her big break didn’t come from a traditional audition, but from a simple, heartfelt review of a vegan BLT sandwich from Whole Foods. This authentic moment, shared from her phone, captured the attention of many and led to her becoming a Whole Foods ambassador.

As she continued to share her personality and vegan recipes with a positive outlook, especially during the challenging times of COVID-19, her social media presence exploded. Her daughter introduced her to TikTok, and Brown decided to embrace it, a decision that would redefine her career trajectory.

    Defying Conventional Wisdom

Brown revealed in a past interview with AFROTECH™ that her agent at the time advised against posting videos for YouTube or Instagram. The advice was to focus solely on traditional acting avenues like stand-up and television shows. Feeling stuck, Brown turned to prayer and then listened to her daughter’s suggestion to try TikTok.

This pivot proved to be a game-changer. Today, Brown boasts 9.6 million followers across TikTok and Instagram alone. She’s authored books, become a sought-after content creator, and secured an impressive 56 deals in just two years, including a retail partnership with Target.

    Building an Empire

Her entrepreneurial spirit didn’t stop there. In 2021, she co-founded Donna’s Recipe, a clean vegan hair care brand that is now available at Ulta Beauty. In 2025, she expanded further by launching a fragrance brand with her husband, Chance. She also holds the role of Chief Financial Officer at Clover, an organization dedicated to empowering small businesses.

Reflecting on the advice she received, Brown shared, “Stay off social media. I chose to lean in, and it changed my life.” Her journey is a powerful testament to the impact of authenticity and embracing new platforms, even when they go against traditional industry norms.

    Inspiring Future Entrepreneurs at AFROTECH™

Brown is set to share her insights at the upcoming AFROTECH™ Conference in Houston, TX, from October 27-31. She’ll be participating in the panel session, “Culturapreneurs: How FinTech is Fueling the Next Generation.” This event is a fantastic opportunity for aspiring entrepreneurs, especially Black women in tech and business, to gain inspiration and knowledge.

  • Damon Dash Files Bankruptcy, Claims $4K Net Worth

In a surprising turn of events, Damon “Dame” Dash, the co-founder of the iconic Roc-A-Fella Records, has officially filed for bankruptcy. Court documents reveal a staggering figure: Dash claims to be in over $25 million worth of debt, with a reported net worth of a mere $4,350. This news comes after years of Dash pursuing various independent business ventures, often emphasizing his commitment to Black ownership.

    The Financial Fallout

According to reports, Dash owes a substantial $19.1 million to the IRS alone. On top of that, he’s facing an additional $647,000 in “support obligations.” This includes significant child support owed to his ex-wife, Rachel Roy, as well as former partners Cindy Morales and Linda Williams. It appears years of contentious personal and professional battles may have taken a significant financial toll.

Despite these challenges, Dash seems ready to tackle this new chapter. He shared the headline about his financial troubles on social media with the caption, “Now lets get to work #staytuned,” suggesting he views this bankruptcy filing as a temporary setback rather than an end. He claims his monthly income is currently $0 and that he doesn’t own a house, car, or any electronics, aside from a $500 cell phone.

    Investing in Dreams, Facing Consequences

Dash has been open about his financial philosophy, often stating that being broke is the price of betting on yourself and investing in your dreams. He recently shared his recovery journey after undergoing successful teeth and eye surgeries, thanking those who supported him. This period of recovery might offer him a chance to reassess his financial strategy.

The mogul’s relationships with former associates, particularly Jay-Z, have been famously strained over the years. While he reportedly is owed an “unknown” amount from former Roc-A-Fella partner Kareem “Biggs” Burke, his biggest financial adversary might be the New York State government. They reportedly purchased his shares of the defunct Roc-A-Fella Records for $1 million to recoup $9 million in taxes owed.

    • IRS debt: $19.1 million
    • Support obligations: $647,000
    • Claimed net worth: $4,350
