  • The Jenesis House: A Self-Care Sanctuary for Black Women

Imagine a place where Black women can finally exhale, a sanctuary designed specifically for their restoration and well-being. That place exists, and it’s called The Jenesis House (TJH). Located in the spiritually charged landscape of Sedona, Arizona, this Black woman-owned wellness estate is more than just a retreat; it’s a profound statement that Black women deserve softness, stillness, and dedicated care.

    A Haven Rooted in Self-Preservation

For many Black women, the demands of navigating a world often marked by racism and sexism mean that rest is frequently sacrificed or feels undeserved. The author, an entrepreneur, daughter, sister, friend, mother, and wife, shares this common experience. Witnessing the prevalence of stress-related illnesses within the community underscores the critical need for radical self-care, making it not just an option, but a necessity. The decision to visit TJH was, therefore, an act of self-preservation.

Stepping onto the TJH grounds felt like entering a different realm. The author describes an immediate sense of peace, where shoulders dropped and jaws unclenched. It was a palpable shift, a welcoming embrace that spoke a familiar, yet often ignored, language: ‘I see you, sis. I’ve got you. Slow down.’

    Thoughtfully Designed for Restoration

The Jenesis House, owned by Jenesis Laforcarde, has quickly become a sought-after destination since opening. The five-acre estate exudes tranquility, featuring a main house, tea house, meditation areas, a bath house, spa, treehouse, and approximately ten guest rooms. The decor, inspired by Laforcade’s Afro-Asian heritage, incorporates warm wood tones, organic textures, and a serene aesthetic designed to promote relaxation.

TJH offers a comprehensive range of wellness services, including spa treatments, journaling, meditation, yoga, breathwork, culinary experiences, Reiki, and pool-floating meditation. The author particularly enjoyed the sound bowl and tea meditations, nourishing meals prepared by a Black woman chef, and the breathtaking backdrop of the red rock mountains during yoga sessions.

    • Sound Bowl Healing: A deeply relaxing and grounding experience.
    • Tea Meditation: A mindful practice savoring nourishing teas.
    • Yoga: Practicing amidst stunning natural scenery.
    • Hiking: Connecting with nature on a peaceful trail.
    • Japanese Bath Ritual: A serene soak in an outdoor tub surrounded by nature.

    Lessons Learned and Inspired Action

The author’s visit to TJH was more than just a vacation; it was a profound journey back to herself. The retreat served as a sanctuary, highlighting the immense benefits of slowing down. The most impactful takeaway was experiencing a space intentionally created by a Black woman, for Black women, understanding their unique needs for thriving. While she couldn’t take the physical estate home, she brought back invaluable inspiration and insights.

Inspired by her experience, she plans to incorporate healthier recipes, commit to daily moments of stillness, and recreate the Japanese bath ritual at home. The core message she carries forward is the vital importance for Black women to actively create, participate in, and claim intentional spaces that nurture and serve them. “Our lives depend on it,” she emphasizes.
