  • Uber Eats Driver Mistakenly Arrested, Denied Translator

In a concerning incident that highlights potential issues with law enforcement practices, an Uber Eats driver was recently handcuffed, shackled, and denied a translator after police admitted they had made a mistake. This happened in Washington D.C. amidst intensified crime crackdowns, and it raises serious questions about due process and treatment.

    A Case of Mistaken Identity?

The ordeal began when customer Tyler DeSue noticed his Uber Eats driver’s location had stalled nearby. Stepping outside, he witnessed the driver being questioned by as many as six officers, many of whom were masked. DeSue reported hearing an officer admit they had run the license plate incorrectly and pulled the driver over by mistake.

Despite acknowledging the error, the officers proceeded to question the driver about his U.S. residency, with DeSue claiming they even attempted facial scanning. This is where the situation took a more disturbing turn. The initial handcuffs were removed, only to be replaced by chains on his ankles, waist, and hands.

    Denied a Translator Amidst Confusion

The driver, clearly confused and facing a language barrier, asked for assistance. “Can you have someone explain it to me in Arabic?” he pleaded. The response from the officer was chilling: “We will not give you a translator until you come with us.” This denial of a translator, especially after admitting a mistake, is deeply troubling.

DeSue, who has a background in criminal justice and homeland security, was visibly shaken by the experience. He stated, “In my mind, it doesn’t stop here,” indicating his intention to pursue the matter further. The identity of the driver has not yet been publicly released.
