  • CDC Director Delays COVID Vaccine Study

A planned study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) aimed at showcasing the benefits of COVID-19 vaccines has been put on hold. Acting Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya has reportedly delayed the release of the report, citing concerns about its methodology. This decision has raised questions and sparked debate among public health experts.

    Concerns Over Study Methodology

The study, originally slated for release in March 2026 in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), focused on the vaccine’s effectiveness in reducing hospitalizations and emergency department visits among healthy adults during the 2025 winter season. However, spokesperson Andrew Nixon stated that Dr. Bhattacharya “expressed concerns about the observational method used in this study to calculate vaccine effectiveness.”

Nixon further explained, “It’s routine for CDC leadership to review and flag concerns about MMWR papers, especially relating to their methodology, leading up to planned publication.” He added that Dr. Bhattacharya wants to ensure the paper employs the most appropriate methodology. Despite these assurances, critics point out that the questioned method, known as a test-negative design, has been used for years to assess vaccine effectiveness against respiratory viruses and was even utilized in a 2021 New England Journal of Medicine study on similar topics.

    Broader Implications and Political Interference

Dr. Bhattacharya was appointed to lead the CDC in February, serving until a permanent director is nominated by President Donald Trump. This delay comes at a time when leading health officials within the Trump administration have reportedly voiced criticism of traditional vaccine research methods. Many public health experts view this delay with suspicion.

Dr. Fiona Havers, a former medical epidemiologist who resigned from the CDC, expressed concern that this action might be part of a larger effort to sow doubt about vaccine safety and accessibility. “I’m not saying that they haven’t stopped other publications or forced changes to them, but to wholesale stop this report from coming out, given that it is such a well-established platform and such a well-established methodology, does strike me as a new level of political interference into CDC’s scientific process,” she stated.

This concern is further fueled by a previous call from former FDA regulator Vinay Prasad for new restrictions on approved COVID-19 vaccines from Novavax and Moderna. That controversy coincided with an announcement about more stringent vaccine approval guidelines, following reports of deaths allegedly linked to a COVID-19 vaccine.

    Ensuring Sound Science

Despite the controversy, Nixon reiterated the CDC’s commitment to scientific integrity, stating that “Dr. Bhattacharya wants to make sure that the paper uses the most appropriate methodology for such a study” and that the CDC is “taking time to ensure analyses are methodologically sound and clearly communicated is always preferable to risking error.” The agency emphasizes that ensuring accuracy and clarity in their findings is paramount.

  • Rockmond Dunbar Sues Disney+ Over Vaccine Mandate

Actor Rockmond Dunbar is heading to trial against Disney+ this week, alleging wrongful termination from the show “9-1-1” due to his refusal to comply with the company’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate. Dunbar claims his complex religious beliefs prevented him from getting vaccinated, a stance that led to his dismissal from the series after his request for a religious exemption was denied.

The Vaccine Mandate and Religious Exemption

The case dates back to the early pandemic years when vaccine mandates were widespread. Dunbar, who portrayed Michael Grant on “9-1-1,” cited his faith as the reason for refusing the vaccine. He claims to be a member of the Congregation of Universal Wisdom and follows a blend of Buddhist and African Yoruba faiths. His legal team argues that adherence to every tenet of the Congregation is not necessary for his beliefs to be protected under federal law.

Disney’s 20th Television, however, contends that Dunbar fabricated his religious excuse. Their legal team plans to introduce evidence of his past use of steroids and synthetic testosterone injections, suggesting a contradiction with his claimed religious objections to Western medicine. Dunbar’s lawyers attempted to block this medical evidence, but a judge ruled it admissible to assess the sincerity of his beliefs.

    Dunbar’s Defense and Beliefs

In a pre-trial memo, Dunbar’s attorneys stated, “Since at least 2014, Plaintiff has held sincere religious beliefs that prevent him from receiving vaccines because he believes they will tether his soul to earth, thereby preventing him from ascending to be with God after his death.” The Congregation of Universal Wisdom, founded by chiropractor Walter Schilling in the 1970s, teaches that vaccines and other medical interventions violate natural law by interfering with the soul’s purity and divine communication.

Dunbar himself insists he “is not against western medicine that is made with God’s consent or that does not cloud my communication with God.” When questioned about the COVID-19 vaccine specifically, he stated that “God personally told everybody in this world, before they sat down or as they sat down to receive the shot, to not get it.” He believes those who chose to get vaccinated “failed” their spiritual test.

  • FDA Limits COVID-19 Vaccine Access for Kids

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the latest version of COVID-19 vaccines for the fall 2025 season, but with a significant shift in eligibility. The new guidelines now primarily target high-risk groups, specifically adults aged 65 and older and individuals with underlying health conditions.

    Concerns Over Restricted Access

This decision has ignited a national debate, drawing criticism from pediatricians and vaccine advocates. They express concern that the move leaves infants, healthy children, and pregnant women without clear pathways for standard vaccination, potentially leaving them more vulnerable.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. clarified via Twitter that vaccines from Moderna, Pfizer, and Novavax are still available if consulted with a doctor. However, the rescinding of emergency authorizations for children under five means healthy toddlers and babies are no longer eligible for standard vaccination protocols.

Expert Opinions and Public Health Impact

Fatima Khan of the nonprofit Protect Their Future stated, “Our health care system is now solidly anti-children and anti-science.” Pediatric leaders echo this sentiment, warning that the decision could lead to an increase in preventable hospitalizations and create further confusion for parents trying to make informed health decisions for their families.

Dr. Susan Kressly of the American Academy of Pediatrics emphasized the importance of accessibility, saying, “Any parent who wants their child vaccinated should have access.” While infectious disease experts suggest off-label access might be possible, it would likely involve a more complex process.

    Shifting Guidance and Rising Cases

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has updated its immunization guidance, shifting the responsibility for vaccination decisions for children and pregnant women to families and physicians. This comes at a time when COVID-19 hospitalizations are reportedly highest among the very young and the elderly, even as virus levels continue to rise nationwide.

Dr. Tina Tan described the FDA’s decision as a “dangerous” shift that could erode public trust and put millions at risk. With infections on the rise, particularly in vulnerable age groups, many fear this policy change could have serious consequences for public health.
