  • Film ‘Consumption’ Highlights Black Women’s Eating Disorders

Imagine a story about isolation, where food becomes a complex emotional battleground. Now, imagine that story centers an experience often left out of the conversation, especially within Black communities: eating disorders. That’s exactly what Howard University student Na’vaeh Dudley is bringing to the screen with her powerful short film, “Consumption.”

Breaking the Silence on Eating Disorders

For too long, the narrative around eating disorders has been narrowly defined, often portraying a specific image that doesn’t reflect the reality for many. Na’vaeh Dudley, a 21-year-old director, is challenging this by drawing from her own life to tell a story that resonates deeply. “Consumption” delves into how isolation can take over and how crucial human connection is to breaking that cycle.

The statistics are stark: research shows Black adolescents are 50% more likely to engage in bulimic behaviors than their white peers, yet they are significantly less likely to be diagnosed or receive treatment. This gap represents a quiet crisis, and Na’vaeh’s film aims to bring visibility to this overlooked struggle. It’s about putting the experiences of Black women back into the frame.

A Story Told Through Nuance and Emotion

The film’s protagonist, Nori, played by Shierra King, lives a life of meticulous control. Every action, every bite, is measured. But when her environment shifts with the introduction of a roommate and the disruption of routines, her carefully constructed patterns begin to unravel. King’s performance is incredibly powerful, conveying immense tension and emotion with minimal dialogue.

Na’vaeh’s goal wasn’t just to tell a story, but to evoke a feeling – one that many might struggle to articulate. This is especially important given cultural norms around food, body image, and community in Black spaces, which can sometimes mask disordered eating patterns. The film captures the blurred line between coping mechanisms and harmful behaviors.

Filmmaking as a Process of Healing

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly influenced Na’vaeh’s vision, amplifying the themes of isolation and the need for connection. Building the film’s crew was a challenge, requiring her to recruit talent from scratch through casting calls and networking within the film community. This dedication highlights the passion behind telling stories that have been historically erased or misunderstood.

“Consumption” doesn’t offer easy answers or a dramatic, instant cure. Instead, it presents a raw, honest portrayal of the healing process, acknowledging that sometimes, the most significant step is simply moving towards wellness. This authenticity is what makes the film so impactful, particularly for viewers who have never seen their experiences reflected in mainstream conversations about eating disorders.

Cures aren’t instantaneous. Sometimes the best thing you can do is take a step toward healing. — Na’vaeh Dudley

Na’vaeh Dudley and her generation of young Black women are taking the narrative into their own hands, documenting their experiences and transforming them into art that can be seen, heard, and felt. It’s a powerful reminder that acknowledging a struggle, and knowing you’re not alone, can be the most crucial first step.

  • Tarana Burke Renews Vows in Lagos, Nigeria

Love is a journey, and for Me Too movement founder Tarana Burke and her husband, Joe, their journey has spanned over three decades. After years of navigating life’s twists and turns, including a pandemic-induced postponement of their original wedding plans, the couple recently celebrated their enduring love with a beautiful vow renewal ceremony in Lagos, Nigeria, in December 2025.

A Love Story Decades in the Making

Burke and Joe’s connection began in 1990 when they were just teenagers living in the same New York City neighborhood. What started with a chance encounter on a basketball court blossomed into a deep connection, though life’s paths eventually led them in separate directions. They experienced college, separate relationships, parenthood, career moves, and personal losses, yet their bond remained.

More than 35 years after they first met, Burke says the qualities that initially attracted her to Joe are still present. “He is still as spontaneous and playful as he was 36 years ago,” she shared exclusively with MadameNoire. “At any moment he will break out and grab me up for a kiss like we are kids in the park.” This playfulness, she notes, continues to be a grounding force in their relationship.

Finding Their Way Back and Embracing Vulnerability

After living separate lives for years, Burke and Joe reconnected in 2014. This reunion brought a sense of “peace and relief,” as Burke knew he was the one. They approached their renewed relationship with intention and maturity, eventually becoming engaged. Burke credits their earlier attempt at a long-distance relationship with teaching them the importance of prioritizing themselves and allowing space for individual growth.

A particularly poignant moment in their journey occurred when Burke encountered Joe in Harlem while arranging her late father’s funeral. In a time of deep grief and vulnerability, Joe quietly stepped in to support her, a gesture that left a lasting impression. “My life can be tumultuous and having a soft place to land is invaluable,” Burke reflected. “Having a partner who has known me for so long keeps me grounded.”

    A Surprise Celebration in Lagos

The idea for the vow renewal began subtly. Burke was planning a surprise trip to Lagos, Nigeria, for Joe’s birthday in December—a month already significant for their anniversary, reunion anniversary, and Joe’s birthday. As the plans evolved, the idea of renewing their vows emerged, eventually expanding into a celebration involving their children and family.

Choosing Lagos held deep personal meaning, as both Burke and Joe’s DNA tests revealed strong Nigerian ancestry. “It meant so much to both of us to be in Nigeria for our vow renewal,” Burke shared. “We both traced our DNA roots to the country… We wanted to both honor our ancestry and do something really special and unique to honor our marriage.”

The ceremony itself was a vibrant celebration, filled with joy and cultural elements, including beautifully crafted wedding fans that became a cherished keepsake for Burke. She described the experience as feeling like a homecoming, affirming and grounding. The event beautifully connected their love story not only to each other but also to their shared ancestry and legacy.

  • IRS May Owe Millions in Pandemic Tax Refunds

A recent court ruling could open the door for millions of Americans to claim a tax refund related to the pandemic. The U.S. Court of Federal Claims ruled in November 2025 that federal tax deadlines should have been extended throughout the entire pandemic period, from January 20, 2020, to May 11, 2023, plus an additional 60 days, as mandated by tax code Section 7508A(d) for federally declared disasters.

Potential Refunds for Late Filers and Penalty Payments

In simpler terms, this ruling suggests that tax filing deadlines from 2019 to 2022 should have been extended to July 10, 2023. Consequently, anyone who filed before this extended date and incurred late penalties or fines might be eligible for a refund or penalty abatement. Tax experts are urging eligible individuals to file their claims promptly due to legal limitations on refund claims.

Jon Wasser, a partner at Fox Rothschild specializing in tax issues, advised, “Millions of taxpayers could be eligible, but if people don’t file claims before July 10, 2026, they lose out on the potential for a refund or abatement.” The IRS is likely to appeal this decision, making the July 10, 2026 deadline crucial for preserving one’s claim.

    Precedent Set by Previous Lawsuits

Pandemic refund claims have seen success in court before. In February 2025, digital storage solutions firm Western Digital filed a lawsuit against the federal government seeking a partial refund of a $53.6 million tax payment submitted in August 2023. The company argued it should not have been charged nearly $21 million in interest, as its filings occurred during the disaster period.

This lawsuit aligns with sentiments expressed by Jessica Marine, a partner at Frost Law, who noted the potential significance of these refunds. “The potential dollar amounts could be significant, particularly for businesses that faced liquidity challenges during the pandemic and incurred substantial failure-to-pay (taxes) penalties,” Marine wrote in a blog post.

How to File a Protective Claim

To determine eligibility for a refund, taxpayers should check their records for any penalties or interest levied by the IRS during the tax filing pause. This information can be obtained from tax professionals or by requesting a tax transcript from the IRS website, via mail, or by calling 800-908-9946. Tax professionals and individuals can file claims using IRS Form 843, “Claim for Refund and Request for Reduction,” referencing the Kwong v. United States decision and the COVID-19 disaster period. This “protective claim” essentially notifies the IRS of a potential refund pending the case’s final determination.
