The New York Giants might be facing a crucial moment in their defensive lineup. Following nose tackle Dexter Lawrence’s trade request after contract negotiations reportedly broke down, teammate Brian Burns is making it clear that Lawrence is indispensable to the team.
Burns: ‘The Giants Ain’t the Giants Without No. 97’
Burns expressed his strong desire for Lawrence to remain a Giant, emphasizing his vital role. “Speaking for me, the Giants ain’t the Giants without No. 97 in the middle,” Burns told The New York Post. “So we are going to figure that out to keep him here regardless, I hope. That’s my boy. And I don’t want to play this season or any other season without him.”
Lawrence, who is entering the third year of a four-year, $90 million extension signed after the 2022 season, is reportedly seeking more money. Despite recording his lowest career totals in tackles (31) and sacks (0.5) last year, Burns recognizes Lawrence’s significant impact on the defense.
Team Management Hopes for Resolution
General Manager Joe Schoen and head coach John Harbaugh have both indicated that the Giants are keen on finding a solution that satisfies both parties. Schoen stated, “We’d like for Dexter to be here, and at some point, we’ll come to a resolution here, whatever that may be… Conversations have been really good, they’ve been productive, and we’ll see what happens here down the road.”
Burns’ Perspective: ‘Figure It Out’
Burns, having experienced contract negotiations himself, understands the business side of the sport. “Business is business,” he told ESPN. “I’ve been through it. … How I feel technically is that we just need him in the building, regardless of whatever it is. Figure it out. Get it done. I don’t want to see somebody else in that 97 besides Dex. So that’s just my take on it.”
Burns’ plea underscores the deep respect and camaraderie within the team, highlighting how crucial Lawrence is not just statistically, but to the overall morale and identity of the Giants’ defense.
