Mary J. Blige will continue to defend herself in civil court against Misa Hylton’s $5 million lawsuit. A New York judge has denied Blige’s request to transfer the case to the state’s Commercial Division, a specialized court for complex business disputes.
Court Denies Transfer Request
Judge Suzanne J. Adams ruled that disputes concerning artist management and entertainment contracts do not fall under the purview of the Commercial Division. She stated that the case’s complexity, choice-of-law issues, and the substantial amount in controversy did not warrant the transfer.
This decision means the legal battle, filed in April 2025, will proceed in the standard civil court system. The lawsuit centers on allegations that Blige interfered with Hylton’s business relationship with rapper Vado.
Allegations of Interference and Damages
Misa Hylton claims she had a valid management agreement with Vado through her company, M.I.S.A. Management. The lawsuit alleges that Blige pressured Vado to break ties with Hylton and sign with Blige’s label, Beautiful Life Productions. Hylton further claims Blige actively restricted Vado’s career opportunities, such as delaying music releases and limiting touring prospects, to facilitate this switch.
The complaint also mentions an alleged incident involving Blige’s head of security, identified as her boyfriend, who reportedly told Vado that remaining with Hylton would cause him to “lose out on opportunities.” Through the lawsuit, Hylton is seeking $5 million in damages and a court order to prevent Blige from interfering with her future business dealings.
Blige’s Defense and Ongoing Case
Mary J. Blige’s legal team has responded by calling Hylton’s claims “patently frivolous” and “meritless.” They argue that Hylton is not properly licensed as a talent agent and that her management company lacks official corporate recognition. Blige’s lawyers have even filed for sanctions, asserting that the lawsuit was initiated for publicity and leverage.
Despite attempts at private negotiation, Hylton’s lawyer stated that discussions collapsed when Blige’s team ceased communication. As of July 2025, the case remains active in civil court, with Blige continuing to push for dismissal while Hylton maintains the validity of her claims.
