It seems J. Cole’s latest professional basketball venture has come to an abrupt end. After signing with the Chinese Basketball Association’s Nanjing Monkey Kings, the Grammy-winning artist announced his departure after playing in just a single game. Visa issues were cited as the reason for his swift exit from the league.
A Brief Stint on the Court
Cole, who was initially slated to play in at least three games, shared his experience on his personal blog, “The Algorithm.” He expressed gratitude for the opportunity, acknowledging the eight minutes he played in one of the top basketball leagues globally. Despite getting a few good looks, he humorously noted he wasn’t able to make a single shot.
The rapper also shared his surprise and appreciation for the fans who attended the game, some even bringing his albums for him to sign. “I also didn’t realize there were so many people in China that rocked with my music!” he wrote, clearly blown away by the support. “Thank you to everybody who showed up and brought an album to sign. I was blown away.”
A Recurring Passion for the Game
This isn’t the first time J. Cole has pursued professional basketball internationally. His time with the Nanjing Monkey Kings marks his third foray into playing the sport abroad. In 2021, he played in the Basketball Africa League for the Rwanda Patriots.
The following year, the artist signed with the Scarborough Shooting Stars in the Canadian Elite Basketball League. While his professional basketball career may have been short-lived this time around, Cole’s passion for the game is evident. He recently released his latest album, “The Fall-Off,” distributed by Interscope Records on his label, Dreamville.
