The internet was buzzing, and for good reason! Jay-Z made a surprise appearance at the Roots Picnic, debuting a completely transformed hairstyle that left many fans doing a double-take. Gone were his signature locs, replaced by a magnificent, voluminous afro that commanded attention.
The Detangling Journey
This dramatic hair change wasn’t a quick fix. It took the skilled hands of loctician Houston Locs a remarkable four days to carefully comb out Jay-Z’s wicks (a thicker type of loc). And the secret weapon? A whopping four bottles of Cecred’s detangling spray were used in the process!
Jay-Z, who began his natural hair journey around 2017, had been sporting his locs for years, most recently seen with them at the 2026 Met Gala. This transformation marks a significant moment in his public appearances and hair evolution.
Styling the New Look
Once the locs were successfully combed out, hairstylist Letisia Ravelo, also known as @LuckyLettty, stepped in to perfect the afro. She shared her excitement on social media, thanking Jay-Z for trusting her with the “switch up” and celebrating his iconic status. It seems the “Big F***ing JIGGA” broke the internet once again!
The buzz around Jay-Z’s hair has also put a spotlight on Cecred’s detangling spray, with the brand sharing clips of its effectiveness. This whole event, from the freestyle dissing Drake and others to the incredible hair transformation, has certainly kept the Carters in the global spotlight.
