Ontario, Canada, is taking a stand against inflated ticket prices! The province has introduced a new law, Bill 97, that prohibits Ticketmaster from reselling tickets above their original cost. This move is a significant step towards curbing the practice of ticket scalping and making concerts, sports events, and festivals more affordable for fans.
New Rules for Ticket Resale
Effective April 23, 2026, tickets sold in Ontario cannot be resold for more than their total original price, including service fees and taxes. This policy applies to a wide range of events, from concerts and major sporting events like FIFA World Cup matches to screenings at the Toronto International Film Festival. Ticketmaster has confirmed its compliance with the new regulations.
The legislation, part of a plan by Ontario Premier Doug Ford (though it awaits royal assent), requires resellers to provide proof of the original ticket price, disclose both original and resale prices to buyers, and maintain records for at least three years post-event. This means a $150 ticket can no longer be flipped for $500, a practice still common in many other parts of the U.S. and Canada.
A Blow to Ticketmaster’s Monopoly?
This development comes just weeks after a U.S. federal jury found Live Nation Entertainment and its subsidiary Ticketmaster guilty of operating an illegal monopoly over live events and ticketing. The lawsuit, filed by the U.S. Department of Justice in May 2024, alleged that the company suppressed competition and overcharged consumers through exclusive venue deals. Potential remedies could even include forcing Ticketmaster to split into separate entities.
Following Ontario’s announcement, fans have expressed widespread support, calling for similar laws globally to combat inflated ticket prices and excessive fees often associated with Ticketmaster. Many hope this move will curb the impact of scalpers and make live events more accessible to everyone.
