  • Campbell’s VP Accused of Racist Rant; Sued

A major controversy is brewing at the Campbell Soup Company following a federal lawsuit that includes an explosive audio recording. The recording allegedly captures a vice president delivering a shocking tirade filled with racist, classist, and profane remarks about his coworkers and the company’s own products.

    The Allegations Unveiled

The lawsuit was filed by former security analyst Robert Garza, who claims he was retaliatorily terminated after reporting the contents of the recording. According to the complaint, the recording was made in November 2024 during a meeting with Vice President and Chief Information Security Officer Martin Bally. What started as a salary discussion reportedly spiraled into an hour-long rant.

The lawsuit alleges that Bally made multiple derogatory comments about employees of Indian descent, reportedly calling them “idiots” who “couldn’t think for their f–king selves.” Beyond racial slurs, Bally is accused of mocking Campbell’s customer base and products, allegedly stating, “We have s–t for f–king poor people. Who buys our s–t? I don’t buy Campbell’s products barely anymore. It’s not healthy now that I know what the f—‘s in it.” He even joked about the chicken in the soup coming from a “3-D printer” and admitted to using marijuana edibles before work.

Retaliation and a Hostile Work Environment

Garza stated he kept the recording for weeks due to “pure disgust” before reporting Bally’s behavior, specifically the racist remarks, to his supervisor in January 2025. Shortly after, on January 30, 2025, Garza, who had no prior disciplinary issues, was terminated. His lawyer asserts that Garza was fired in retaliation for exposing the vice president’s alleged misconduct.

The lawsuit accuses Campbell’s of maintaining a racially hostile work environment and claims Garza received no follow-up from human resources regarding an investigation or explanation for his termination.

    Campbell’s Response and Investigation

Campbell’s has confirmed the situation, stating that if the comments on the recording were indeed made by Bally, they are “unacceptable” and “do not reflect our values and the culture of our company.” The company has placed Mr. Bally on temporary leave pending an investigation. They also defended their products, asserting that the claims about the food are “inaccurate” and “patently absurd,” emphasizing that their chicken comes from trusted, USDA-approved suppliers.

Campbell’s also pointed out that Bally works in IT and has no direct involvement in food production. This statement aims to distance the company’s core operations from the alleged remarks made by the IT executive.

Industry Reaction and Support for Small Brands

The incident has drawn criticism from other businesses, including Black-owned food company Goode Food. Their CEO posted on Instagram, highlighting the irony of a VP mocking the very consumers who support the company. The post emphasized the value of family-owned brands that prioritize transparency and respect, contrasting them with corporate entities that might treat food as mere “science experiments.”
