Imagine trading the roar of the football stadium for the voices of a congregation. That’s exactly the path taken by Derwin Gray, a former NFL defensive back who has successfully transitioned from the gridiron to the pulpit, becoming the lead pastor at Transformation Church.
A Divine Calling on the Field
Gray, who played for the Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers, experienced a pivotal moment during a game in 1998. While making a tackle, he heard a voice that questioned his presence on the field, sparking a profound internal shift. This encounter marked the beginning of his journey away from professional football and towards ministry.
The desire to play football began to fade, and during a period of injury, Gray found himself immersed in the Bible instead of rehabbing. This time of reflection solidified his calling, leading him to trade his cleats for scriptures and his defensive strategies for spiritual guidance.
Leading Transformation Church
Now, instead of preparing for Sunday games, Gray wakes up to preach to his congregation in South Carolina. Transformation Church, co-founded by Gray and his wife Vicki, has two locations and serves over 12,000 parishioners. Gray often describes his leadership style with a football analogy: “I’m a football coach disguised as a pastor. My staff are the coaches, and you are the team, and we are equipping you to play.”
His wife, Vicki, whom he met at Brigham Young University where they were both athletes (he played football, she threw the javelin), plays a crucial role as co-founder. Gray emphasizes the lasting impact of transformation over fleeting inspiration, stating, “Inspiration will only last for a moment. Transformation will last for a lifetime.”
