  • Harvard Alumni Invent Hair-Braiding Robot

Imagine getting intricate braids done in minutes, not hours. For millions of Americans, hair braiding is a beloved protective style, but the process is notoriously time-consuming and can even lead to physical strain for stylists. Now, thanks to the ingenuity of Harvard alumni, a groundbreaking hair-braiding robot is poised to transform the salon experience forever.

Halo Braid: Innovation in a 5,000-Year-Old Process

Meet Halo Braid, a company founded by Harvard alumni Yinka Ogunbiyi and David Afolabi. They’ve developed a patent-pending robot designed to complete braids after a stylist starts the process. This innovation recently earned them the $75,000 grand prize in the Alumni & Affiliates Open Track category at the 2025 President’s Innovation Challenge Award, hosted by the Harvard Innovation Lab.

Ogunbiyi, who has worn braids her entire life, shared the personal motivation behind the invention. “Imagine if every time you got your hair cut, it took six hours, cost two to $300 and gave your hair stylist arthritis at age 29,” she stated during the competition. She recounted braiding her own hair, a process that took four days, highlighting the immense time commitment involved for millions of Americans who get braids every eight weeks.

    Faster, Better, Joyful Braiding

The Halo Braid robot, which resembles a sleek standing dryer, utilizes machine learning to deliver professional-quality braids at an astonishing five times the speed. This means stylists can serve more clients, expand their businesses, and importantly, reduce the physical toll on their hands. Ogunbiyi’s vision is clear: to make braiding “joyful, not painful.”

The technology has already been tested, successfully completing thousands of braids, including Ogunbiyi’s own. Over the past 18 months, the team has meticulously refined over 450 prototypes to ensure the robot works seamlessly with real human hair. With the prize money, Halo Braid plans to open a salon in Boston by the end of the year to pilot and scale their technology before wider manufacturing.

    Transforming an Ancient Art

The impact of Halo Braid could be monumental. By saving billions of hours collectively spent on braiding each year, this innovation has the potential to completely revolutionize an industry that has remained largely unchanged for millennia. Stylists and salons interested in adopting this cutting-edge technology can already join a waitlist for its commercial availability.

  • 15 Protective Styles for Sports & Activity

Staying active is crucial for a healthy lifestyle, but keeping your hair in check during intense workouts or sports can be a challenge. Thankfully, protective hairstyles are a game-changer! Whether you’re hitting the gym, playing your favorite sport, or just breaking a sweat, the right hairstyle can protect your strands, prevent damage, and keep you looking sharp and confident.

Why Protective Styles Matter for Active Lifestyles

For Black women, especially, protective styles are more than just a trend; they’re a necessity. Styles like braids, cornrows, and Bantu knots keep your hair tucked away, shielding your ends from breakage, environmental damage, and the stress of daily wear and tear. When you’re active, your hair can get pulled, stretched, and tossed around, making these styles essential for maintaining hair health and supporting growth.

The beauty of these hairstyles lies in their versatility. They’re perfect for the gym, the court, or even the office, allowing you to express your personal style while keeping your hair secure. Many athletes proudly rock these styles, not just for convenience but also as a vibrant expression of Black culture.

Top 15 Protective Hairstyles for Staying Active

    1. Braided Updo

This chic style weaves intricate braids into an elegant updo, keeping hair tightly secured to the scalp. It’s perfect for preventing flyaways during intense activity. Former WNBA star Candace Parker famously rocked these sleek styles, allowing her to focus on the game.

    2. Cornrows

Plated close to the scalp in neat patterns, cornrows offer a sleek, secure look that withstands high-impact movements. They’re low-maintenance and stylish, as seen on stars like A’ja Wilson.

    3. Box Braids

Individual plaits in square sections, box braids are thicker and can be accessorized. They’re durable, low-maintenance, and long-lasting – a favorite of tennis legend Venus Williams.

    4. Twists

Smooth and rope-like, twists offer a full, voluminous look that’s both protective and elegant. Naomi Osaka often sports twists on the court, keeping her hair protected with flair.

    5. Locs (Real or Faux)

Whether natural or faux, locs can be a great protective style if installed without excessive tension. WNBA star Nneka Ogwumike showcases the versatility and security of her natural locs.

    6. Bantu Knots

These small, coiled buns secured at the scalp define natural curls and stay put during physical exertion. They offer a fresh, bold look with minimal maintenance.

    7. Dutch Braids

A raised variation of traditional braids, Dutch braids keep hair tight and secure, perfect for high-intensity sports. Angel Reese often rocks this athletic and polished style.

    8. High Bun

A classic for a reason, gathering hair at the crown keeps it out of your face for a clean, professional look that minimizes movement. USC star JuJu Watkins relies on this simple style.

    9. Low Bun

Pulled back at the nape of the neck, a low bun is comfortable, secure, and versatile. Coco Gauff often opts for a low-braided ponytail for focus during matches.

    10. Afro Puffs

These playful yet functional buns, often placed high on either side of the head, keep hair out of the face during intense movement. UConn’s Qadence Samuels sported them for a practical yet energetic look.

    11. Twist Out

This natural style creates defined, bouncy curls after unraveling set twists. Brittney Griner often rocks a twist-out, allowing her natural curls freedom and movement.

    12. Flat Twists

Similar to cornrows but using twists, this style lies flat against the scalp, offering a uniform, protective, and neat option for athletes. Monique Billings often wears flat twists.

    13. Low Tapered Cut

With short sides and longer curls on top, this cut is stylish, easy to maintain, and practical for athletes with natural curls. Former WNBA star Danielle Robinson has sported this look.

    14. Curly Ponytail

A softer option, this style gathers curls into a ponytail, allowing them to flow freely while staying in place. Former player Celeste Taylor often wore curly ponytails.

    15. Island Twists

A fun twist on classic styles, these large, versatile twists can be worn up or down. Indiana Fever center Aaliyah Boston has rocked them on the court.

  • ‘Love Island’ Stars Chelley & Olandria Bond Over Braids

Season 7 of Peacock’s “Love Island USA” delivered some of the most talked-about TV moments, placing its Islanders at the center of pop culture conversations. Among the breakout stars, Chelley Bissainthe and Olandria Carthen navigated the fame and the harsh online backlash often directed at Black women in reality television. The best friends recently spoke with Teen Vogue about their journey in the villa and the enduring strength of their friendship.

    Addressing Unfair ‘Mean Girl’ Labels

Following their time in the villa and ahead of the Love Island reunion, Chelley and Olandria shared their shock and disappointment regarding the online backlash they received. They were unfairly labeled “mean girls” after holding controversial cast member Huda Mustafa accountable for her actions. “It was confusing and so weird because we knew who we were in that villa,” Chelley told Teen Vogue. “We know how much we showed up for every single person on that island… So for us to come out of the villa and see that we’re mean girls, we’re like, ‘Mean girls where?’”

Chelley expressed frustration at the double standard, questioning why they faced criticism for speaking their truth and holding others accountable, while similar behavior from others went unaddressed. “How dare you guys say something like that to us, but not to everyone who was having that mean girl energy or mean girl moments? It goes back to the whole, you have to act a certain type of way [as a Black woman] because the moment you act ‘out of character’ you’re done,” she explained. They emphasized that their actions were about accountability, not name-calling or aggression.

    Navigating Stereotypes and Finding Support

Olandria added that the unfair narrative was exacerbated by fellow Islanders who, after leaving the villa, further fueled the bullying accusations. “To see our fellow Islanders playing into that narrative was hard,” Chelley recalled. “It’s like, you knew us, why would you get out and let America, let social media get to your head?”

Olandria highlighted the pressure Black women face to constantly manage their emotions in the public eye. “They use a moment of weakness and make that one specific time our whole character. I knew that when it came to my emotions, I had to dial that back… The moment that I did break and I kind of blew, people were like, ‘I knew it. That’s the real her.’ I wanted to be unapologetically me, but it’s like this world doesn’t allow Black women to do that.”

    A Friendship Meant to Be

Luckily, they had each other for support. Both Chelley and Olandria had been approached for the show in previous seasons but felt that being cast together in Season 7 was fate. “We’re soul sisters for a reason,” Olandria told Teen Vogue. “We’ll always say to one another, ‘God knew we needed each other.’ I’m so happy the past seasons did not work out for us because season 7 was the year to be here at the same time.”

Their bond was immediate, with many favorite moments revolving around their hair. Both opted for braids to manage the Fiji heat and the show’s challenges. “I think one of the biggest things for us is when we both walked out, got into the villa, and looked at each other and we’re like, ‘Oh, we both got braids,’” Chelley recalled. Olandria added, “On our off days, Chelley and I would be on the floor crocheting my hair, looping my braids through [to freshen them up]. We didn’t have anyone there to braid our hair.”

This shared experience over hair, something deeply understood within the Black community, was a key factor in solidifying their friendship. “That was just a moment of like, ‘Yo, you’re my girl. You know you’re stuck with me, right? You’re not going anywhere,’” Chelley said, with Olandria adding, “My girl—we are in it for the long haul.”
