  • Howard University & NewsOne Launch Bison ONE Newsroom

In a powerful move to support and amplify Black voices in journalism, NewsOne and Howard University’s Cathy Hughes School of Communications have launched the Bison ONE Newsroom. This groundbreaking initiative is a first-of-its-kind partnership, aiming to provide a vital platform for emerging Black journalists.

A Crucial Time for Black Journalism

The launch comes at a critical juncture for media. In an era where Black journalists’ voices are often suppressed or distorted, and misinformation runs rampant, supporting those committed to uncovering intersectional truths is more important than ever. This partnership directly addresses that need, fostering a new generation of truth-tellers.

The Bison ONE Newsroom builds upon the success of the iONE Digital NewsOne x Bison 2024 Election coverage, expanding it into a comprehensive, multi-media experience. It aims to disrupt narratives that obscure the humanity of Black people by creating something innovative and lasting, built by Black institutions for Black communities.

    Honoring Legacy, Building the Future

The initiative is deeply rooted in the rich tradition of Black journalism, drawing inspiration from pioneers like Ida B. Wells-Barnett and publications such as Freedom’s Journal and the Chicago Defender. Kirsten West Savali, Vice President of Content at iONE Digital, expressed her pride in paving the way for young Black journalists, just as others did for her.

Under the guidance of renowned journalist, author, and professor Dr. Stacey Patton, student journalists at Howard University will gain invaluable experience. This partnership serves as a pioneering blueprint for how institutions can stand together to create powerful, authentic narratives.

Having lost my paper, had a price put on my life, and been made an exile from home for hinting at the truth, I felt I owed it to myself and to my race to tell the whole truth. — Ida B. Wells-Barnett

A Blueprint for Disruption and Legacy

The Bison ONE Newsroom is more than just a media outlet; it’s a testament to the power of HBCUs as incubators of cultural and political transformation. By blending in-depth reporting, real-time coverage, and heartfelt storytelling, it aims to disrupt harmful narratives and celebrate the resilience and brilliance of the Black community.

NewsOne honors this sacred tradition by passing the microphone to emerging journalists who will shape how history remembers this urgent moment. It’s a powerful statement that Black people are the authors of their own stories, embodying resistance, revolution, and audacious Black brilliance.
