Imagine hearing a new song from Whitney Houston, 13 years after her passing. It sounds like a dream, but it’s now a reality thanks to English singer Calum Scott. He’s released a stunning duet, a ballad-style reinterpretation of Houston’s iconic hit, ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me),’ using her original vocal stems.
An Unimaginable Honor
For Calum Scott, this project was more than just a song; it was a career-defining moment. “It wasn’t even something I could have dreamt as a possibility, and the fact that I’m getting to do it is, geez, one of the honors of my career,” he shared with the Associated Press. Houston’s voice, a soundtrack to his childhood thanks to his mother, remains one of the most influential in his life and for countless others.
Scott describes Houston as “timeless,” a sentiment echoed by many who grew up with her powerful vocals. This new collaboration aims to capture that enduring magic, blending Scott’s modern artistry with Houston’s legendary talent.
The Journey to a Duet
Bringing this duet to life required the approval of several key parties. This included Pat Houston, Whitney’s sister-in-law and executor of her estate, and Primary Wave, which secured the rights to many of Houston’s hits in 2022. The idea for this specific collaboration actually originated with Primary Wave.
They were aware of Calum Scott’s powerful live cover of ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody,’ which he performed as a ballad, blending it with Robyn’s ‘Dancing On My Own’ while opening for Ed Sheeran in 2024. This stripped-down, emotional rendition caught their attention.
Pat Houston’s Vision
Pat Houston recognized the potential, especially with 2025 marking the 40th anniversary of Whitney Houston’s music career. “Whitney was a balladeer and that’s why we all fell in love with her,” she stated. “And Calum turned the song into a beautiful ballad.” Seeing Scott’s ability to transform the upbeat pop anthem into a heartfelt ballad made it a clear choice.
Crafting the Ballad
The process involved Scott receiving the original vocal stems from Houston’s longtime producer, Narada Michael Walden. He then collaborated with producers Jon “MAGS” Maguire, Andrew Yeates, and Charlie T in the UK, adding a string section to enhance the somber mood. Scott humorously described the goal as, “Take a pop song and make it sad.”
He noted that the original lyrics already carry a melancholic undertone, speaking of yearning rather than fulfilled love. While an early demo experimented with a minor key chorus, it was deemed too depressing, and the change was swiftly made to retain some of Houston’s signature ebullience, even at a slower tempo.
Respecting the Original
A key decision was to let Houston’s voice lead the song. “Whitney starts the song because this is her song,” Scott explained. “I would never dare stand in front of Whitney for that first verse.” Even small imperfections, like the sound of a snare drum bleeding into her vocal from the original tape recording, were preserved as integral parts of the performance.
The iconic key change in the final chorus was also kept, a challenging feat that required Scott to “dig for those high notes” to harmonize with Houston. He emphasized the profound honor of simply singing alongside her.
Songwriters’ Blessing and Emotional Connection
The original songwriters, George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam, were immediately supportive. Merrill praised Scott’s approach: “He had the boldness to tear it all down and just have acoustic piano, just Whitney, and then give her the first verse. … To me, that’s showing such respect.” They recognized Scott as a virtuosic vocalist, capable of matching Houston’s emotional depth and power.
Rubicam added that they are a “good vocal match together,” both possessing significant emotionality and command over their instruments. This shared ability to convey deep feeling creates a powerful connection in the duet.
More Than a Tribute
Scott views the collaboration not as a tribute, but as an active part of his own musical journey. “I felt like I gently walked alongside Whitney,” he said. The song is intended to feel alive, channeling Houston’s spirit. This new version of ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody’ will be featured on Scott’s upcoming album, ‘Avenoir,’ set for release on October 10th.
Pat Houston agreed, noting the song’s enduring popularity. “Forty years ago, this particular song was hot then and it’s hot now,” she said. “So why not keep producing. But it’s the right connection, it’s the right platform and it certainly is the right artist to collab with her on this.”
