Atlanta’s streets saw a major law enforcement operation this past weekend as the police department cracked down on a large-scale, illegal marijuana pop-up event. Dubbed ‘Operation No Smoke,’ the bust resulted in the arrest of 40 individuals and the seizure of substantial quantities of illicit substances, weapons, and cash.
The ‘Operation No Smoke’ Bust
Acting on an anonymous tip, the Atlanta Police Department, with assistance from the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, executed a search warrant on April 18th. Upon arrival, officers encountered over 70 people at the location. The event, which had over 1,400 people registered and was promoted via social media, was organized by individuals from 11 different states and featured 24 vendors.
The scene quickly turned chaotic as some attendees attempted to flee. Vendors reportedly barricaded doors while others tried to escape through a back entrance. Lt. Jason Smith described the scene as more than 70 people running from the location, jumping on roofs, running on railroad tracks, and discarding guns, marijuana, and gummies in an effort to evade capture.
Significant Seizures Made
The search warrant yielded an impressive haul of illegal items. Authorities confiscated approximately 1,220 pounds of marijuana, 391 pounds of THC edibles, and 29 pounds of psilocybin mushrooms. In addition to the drugs, officers seized 15 firearms – two of which belonged to security guards – over $32,000 in cash, and nine vehicles.
Concerns Over Violence and Distribution
During a press conference announcing the bust, Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum addressed the potential dangers associated with the wholesale distribution of marijuana. He emphasized that such activities often lead to violence, as individuals may seek to acquire the product or the proceeds from its sale, frequently involving firearms.
The police department also released video footage of the operation, offering a visual account of the chaotic events that unfolded. This bust serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in combating large-scale illegal drug operations.
