Actress and comedian Amanda Seales is bravely sharing a deeply personal experience through her new memoir series, ‘Bodywavin’ Through the BS.’ The first installment, titled ‘Crank Dat Through a Sexual Assault,’ details a sexual assault she endured in 2023 and the profound impact it had on her, offering a resource for survivors and those who wish to support them.
A Journey of Healing and Revelation
In an Instagram video announcing the release, Seales, 44, shared that the assault occurred in January 2023 while she was traveling with her boyfriend. She described the experience as revealing ‘a lot to me about myself’ and, significantly, ‘even more to me about the incapacity of those around me to support me through this horrific experience.’ This highlights the critical need for better support systems for survivors.
Seales chose to release this chapter as Sexual Assault Awareness Month (April) concluded, aiming to provide a guide for navigating such traumatic experiences. ‘This chapter speaks not only to my experience, it speaks to the ways in which I got through it and as a guide to helping all of us be better at showing up,’ she explained. She hopes her written account will serve as a pathway to healing for others.
Sharing Vulnerability and Seeking Support
Seales had previously touched upon the assault in a 2024 episode of her podcast, ‘Small Doses.’ She recounted how an intruder entered their Airbnb through an unlocked balcony door while she was on vacation. The lack of concern from the Airbnb owner afterward, who reportedly asked if anything was stolen, left her questioning the reality of her experience – a common struggle for many survivors.
The memoir chapter is available in hardcover, paperback, and e-book formats on amandalandexports.com. In her Instagram caption, Seales expressed her hope that this work will aid in ‘reclaiming our souls from a world wired to take them.’ Art, she believes, has been a crucial element in her own healing process.
