The decades-old controversy surrounding the sex tape featuring Ray J and Kim Kardashian is back in the spotlight, with Ray J leveling serious accusations against Kardashian and her mother, Kris Jenner. In new legal filings, the singer claims their current lawsuit against him is not about defamation, but rather a calculated move for “publicity, power, and punishment.”
A Consensual Past vs. a Weaponized Narrative
Ray J asserts that Kardashian and Jenner have spent the last two decades promoting a false narrative – that the tape was leaked against her will. He maintains that the video, filmed in 2003, was consensually recorded. Furthermore, he claims that he and Kardashian discussed releasing it in 2006, with Kardashian allegedly suggesting Kris Jenner manage the rollout.
The R&B artist, born William Ray Norwood Jr., alleges that Kardashian and Jenner are upset because he is no longer playing along with what he calls their “tall tale.” He further claims that Kardashian, Jenner, Kanye West, and Kendall Jenner falsely accused him on their Hulu show, “The Kardashians,” of assaulting Kardashian while she was asleep, as well as engaging in extortion and revenge porn.
Allegations of Broken Agreements and Fame Sacrifice
Ray J’s filing details a previous settlement where he claims he was to receive $6 million, and the family would cease all public references to the tape on their show. He argues that this agreement was broken almost immediately after its execution. His attorney stated that Ray J “will not allow Kardashian and Jenner to weaponize the judicial system, shirk their contractual obligations, and sacrifice him on the altar of fame.”
The Kardashian-Jenner legal team, represented by attorney Alex Spiro, has strongly refuted these claims. Spiro dismissed Ray J’s arguments as a “disjointed rambling distraction” and stated, “Ray J will lose this frivolous case, too.” He emphasized that the family “have never brought a defamation claim before… but this false and serious allegation left no choice.”
The RICO Case Context
The current defamation lawsuit was initiated last month after Ray J claimed he was assisting federal authorities with a RICO case against the Kardashians. The complaint filed by Kardashian and Jenner explicitly states that “no such federal investigation exists” and that “No law enforcement agency has initiated any criminal proceedings or investigations related to racketeering charges against Ms. Kardashian or Ms. Jenner.”
