In response to recent lengthy security lines, the airline has rolled out a new feature in its mobile app designed to give you a heads-up on TSA wait times before you even reach the airport.

Launched earlier this month, this new tool provides estimated TSA wait times specifically for United’s U.S. hubs. This includes major airports like Chicago O’Hare (ORD), Denver International (DEN), Houston Intercontinental (IAH), Los Angeles International (LAX), Newark Liberty (EWR), San Francisco International (SFO), and Washington Dulles (IAD).
These locations were chosen because they’ve experienced significant increases in wait times recently. The app will display estimates for both standard security lanes and TSA PreCheck, with information updated on a regular basis. For Houston’s IAH, the data is sourced directly from the Houston Airport System, while other hubs rely on data available to the airline.
A First-of-Its-Kind Feature
United Airlines is touting this as a “first-of-its-kind offering from a major U.S. airline.” Jason Birnbaum, the airline’s Chief Information Officer, highlighted the importance of keeping customers informed, especially during times of uncertainty like the recent government shutdown. He emphasized that travelers rely on the app for their travel needs, and this feature enhances their ability to plan trips with confidence.
This isn’t the only way United is aiming to empower travelers. The airline also offers features like Virtual Gate for real-time boarding group updates and Automatic Rebooking Assistance for flight disruptions, all designed to provide a smoother, more self-sufficient travel experience.
