  • Air Canada Offers Free Alcohol in Economy

Get ready for a more enjoyable flight experience! Air Canada is making a significant move to enhance its economy class service by offering complimentary beer, wine, and snacks on all flights starting this fall. This decision positions Air Canada as the sole North American legacy airline to provide free alcoholic beverages across its entire network for economy passengers.

A Strategic Move for Customer Loyalty

In contrast to U.S. competitors like American, Delta, and United, which offer free drinks only on longer flights, and budget carriers that charge for all alcoholic beverages, Air Canada is betting on goodwill. The airline believes that offering complimentary drinks will foster greater customer loyalty and satisfaction, potentially boosting its bottom line.

Scott O’Leary, Air Canada’s vice president of loyalty and product, explained the strategic thinking behind the decision. He noted that “food and beverage tend to have a disproportionate impact on customer satisfaction.” By waiving alcohol charges instead of reducing baggage fees, the airline aims to provide more tangible value to passengers.

Highlighting Canadian Products and Unique Offerings

The initiative also shines a spotlight on Canadian products. Morning flights will feature complimentary oat bars from the Canadian brand MadeGood. Additionally, flights departing from Toronto’s Billy Bishop Airport after 10:30 a.m. will offer ginger wellness shots from local producer Greenhouse. Notably, Air Canada is also becoming the only North American carrier to serve Heineken 0.0, a non-alcoholic beer, at cruising altitude.

This move comes at a time when airlines are grappling with an increase in unruly passenger incidents, many of which are alcohol-related. The International Air Transport Association reported a rise in disruptive passenger incidents globally. However, Air Canada seems to be gambling that responsible alcohol service, coupled with these enhanced offerings, will ultimately improve the overall travel experience and strengthen brand loyalty.

    Balancing Service with Safety

While the prospect of free drinks is appealing, airlines continue to face challenges in managing passenger behavior, especially concerning alcohol consumption. Despite the potential for increased incidents, Air Canada’s decision reflects a strategic investment in customer experience, aiming to differentiate itself in a competitive market.

  • New ‘Floating’ Viewpoint for Mt. Fuji Opens in Japan

For those who dream of witnessing the majesty of Mt. Fuji but aren’t keen on the challenging climb, a spectacular new option has opened in Japan. Izu Panorama Park has unveiled the “Aqua Ring,” a breathtaking viewing area that offers a unique “floating” sensation and unparalleled vistas of the iconic mountain.

    A Sky-High ‘Floating’ Experience

Located atop Katsuragi Mountain in Shizuoka Prefecture, the Aqua Ring is a 1,483-foot high, oval-shaped platform that opened earlier this year. Situated within the Izu Panorama Park, which has roots dating back to 1962, this new addition provides visitors with stunning 360-degree views. The park describes the Aqua Ring as a place “where the blue of the sky and the blue of Suruga Bay blend together.”

The design of the protruding deck is intended to give visitors the unique sensation of being suspended in the air, seemingly one with the surrounding scenery. From this elevated vantage point, guests can capture incredible photos of Mt. Fuji, as well as panoramic views of the Izu Peninsula, Suruga Bay, and the popular nearby destination of Hakone.

Getting to the Top and Nearby Attractions

Izu Panorama Park is conveniently located about a two-hour drive southwest of Tokyo. To reach the Aqua Ring, visitors will take the park’s ropeway, which ascends to the summit of Katsuragi Mountain. At the base of the park, an Italian restaurant offers dining options, while a “Modern-Japanese style café” is available at the summit, perfect for enjoying a matcha beverage before or after taking in the views.

Mt. Fuji itself, a stratovolcano standing at 12,389 feet, is considered an active geological site, though its last eruption was in the early 1700s. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is a revered symbol of Japan and a bucket-list destination for climbers worldwide. Importantly, the Aqua Ring is wheelchair accessible, ensuring that all visitors can enjoy the magnificent scenery.
