A devastating loss has struck the college basketball world. Deng Mayar, a 22-year-old rising star for the University of Nebraska Omaha, tragically passed away in a drowning incident at Utah’s Blackridge Reservoir on Saturday, August 16. The news has sent shockwaves through his family, teammates, and the wider sports community.
A Tragic Accident at Blackridge Reservoir
Mayar, who had recently transferred to Omaha, was swimming in Herriman, Utah, when he began to struggle in the water around 5:45 p.m. His friend, 21-year-old Sa Mafutaga, who was swimming with him, managed to reach the shore. In a heroic effort, Mafutaga attempted to go back to save Mayar but was unsuccessful. Witnesses pulled Mafutaga from the water and rushed him to the hospital, where he is expected to recover.
Sadly, Mayar’s body was located by a submersible robot approximately 35 yards from shore later that evening, around 10:40 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene. This heartbreaking event follows another significant loss in the sports world earlier this year.
Tributes Pour In for Deng Mayar
The University of Nebraska Omaha men’s basketball program is in mourning. Head coach Chris Crutchfield released an emotional statement, calling Mayar a “joy to be around” who “made our culture better.” He added, “We will miss him greatly.” Coaches and teammates remember Mayar not just as a talented player, but as a hard worker with an infectious positive spirit.
North Dakota head coach Paul Sather also shared his grief, describing Mayar as “a wonderful person with a heart the size of a gym.” He noted Mayar’s competitive nature on the court was matched by his “gentle nature and kind soul off the court.”
Remembering a Promising Career
Born and raised in Salt Lake City, Mayar’s journey in basketball was marked by perseverance. He played his previous season at North Dakota, averaging 6.3 points and four rebounds per game. His transfer to Omaha as a graduate student was met with excitement, with coaches anticipating a significant impact. His progress during summer training had already impressed the coaching staff.
