The dance community is mourning the loss of a true warrior. Donyelle Jones, a memorable finalist from season 2 of “So You Think You Can Dance,” passed away on December 2, 2025, after an inspiring, decade-long battle with breast cancer.
A Warrior’s Journey
Her family shared the heartbreaking news on her Instagram account, announcing her peaceful transition. They described her as “a wife. A daughter. A sister. A friend. And a warrior who kicked cancer’s ass every single day she was here.” They emphasized that her spirit never wavered, her heart remained kind, and she always kept a smile, even through immense challenges.
Donyelle was first diagnosed with stage 3C breast cancer in 2016. For nearly ten years, she bravely documented her journey, sharing her struggles and triumphs with her followers. Even as her cancer progressed to stage 4 metastatic breast cancer, Donyelle found moments of joy and purpose. In July, she celebrated a significant milestone: teaching her first dance class in four years.
Finding Strength in Dance
She shared her feelings about returning to dance, writing, “DANCE IS MY SAFE PLACE. I needed this moment. I need my community. Dance is the vehicle I’ve used most to help me live out my purpose, pursue my dreams, heal my pain and celebrate my victories.” Donyelle spoke about learning to navigate life’s seasons and embracing possibilities, even when cancer had taken so much.
Just days before her passing, Donyelle shared a poignant final message. She spoke about getting her affairs in order and being in hospice care. She expressed her surrender to God’s will, acknowledging the ten years of miracles she had already received and audaciously believing in the possibility of divine healing, while also being realistic about her situation.
Tributes and Fond Memories
Actress Yvette Nicole Brown was among the many who paid tribute to Donyelle. She shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, calling Donyelle “the best of us. One of one.” Brown expressed gratitude for Donyelle showing them “how to live and fight and love and DANCE!” and promised to see her on the other side.
Donyelle’s passing follows the recent, tragic death of fellow “So You Think You Can Dance” winner Joshua Allen, who passed away in a fatal train accident earlier this year. The resilience and spirit of dancers like Donyelle Jones continue to inspire.
