A family is reeling and demanding answers after a tragic incident at a Fort Wayne, Indiana Tim Hortons left their beloved 75-year-old matriarch, Anita Grayson, dead. What started as a simple trip for a coffee and a doughnut on May 13, 2026, ended in heartbreak, leaving her daughter, Tawnda Grayson, to question how such a situation could escalate so tragically.
The Altercation Unfolds
According to the Fort Wayne Police Department, officers were called to the Tim Hortons on Ice Way around 8 a.m. following a report of an altercation. Anita Grayson had reportedly entered the store to address an issue with her drive-thru order. Inside, she became engaged in an argument, described by police as “berating,” with a 17-year-old employee.
A 20-year-old team leader intervened, asking Ms. Grayson to leave. However, surveillance footage indicates that Ms. Grayson then “forcefully” shoved the team leader backward and struck her in the face. The situation escalated further when Ms. Grayson allegedly scratched the employee’s face, knocked off her glasses, and pulled out a chunk of her hair.
Tragic Aftermath and Family Concerns
Tragically, about ten minutes after the physical altercation, Anita Grayson was found unresponsive on the floor. She was rushed to a local hospital but was later pronounced dead. The Allen County Coroner’s office is still working to determine an official cause of death, though preliminary findings suggest no significant external injuries.
Tawnda Grayson expressed deep distress over the events and the investigation. She revealed that her mother had congestive heart failure and was wearing a heart monitor just a week prior to the incident. “You should not enter a coffee shop for a coffee and a doughnut and come out unalived,” Tawnda stated, calling the situation “diabolical.”
Questions Surrounding the Investigation
The family has raised serious concerns about the police department’s handling of the investigation. Tawnda has accused authorities of attempting to cover up the incident, even suggesting that the released surveillance video may have been edited using artificial intelligence to portray her mother as the aggressor. “They’re trying to cover it up,” she told the Daily Mail, believing the focus should be on charging the Tim Hortons workers rather than blaming her mother.
Police have stated that they are awaiting a full review of the complete surveillance footage, urging the public to disregard circulating video clips that may present a “dangerously false narrative.” No arrests have been made as the investigation remains ongoing, with the prosecutor’s office also involved.
In the meantime, Tawnda has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover her mother’s funeral and memorial expenses. Pastor and activist Carlton Lynch has announced that funeral services for Anita Grayson are scheduled for the first week of June and will be open to the public.
