Our hearts go out to soul singer Alexander O’Neal and his wife, Cynthia. The couple was hospitalized early Friday morning after a devastating fire ripped through their apartment in Burnsville, Minnesota. This news comes just as Alexander was released from the ICU after a recent health scare.
A Frightening Night in Burnsville
The blaze reportedly started around 1:30 a.m. in a third-floor unit at the Willoway Apartments. A neighbor’s quick thinking and call to 911 escalated the situation, leading to a three-alarm response that brought in resources from surrounding communities. Firefighters worked tirelessly through the night to contain the flames and ensure residents’ safety.
Tragically, Alexander, who had just spent nearly two weeks in the ICU for a rare bacterial pneumonia and an enlarged heart, was still extremely weak. His wife, Cynthia, recounted waking up to Alexander urgently alerting her to a fire that seemed to originate from the cord of his oxygen machine. She described seeing another fire on the floor, which Alexander attempted to extinguish, sustaining burns in the process.
The Escape and Aftermath
With flames spreading rapidly, the couple had no choice but to flee their apartment. Due to Alexander’s fragile condition, they could only move a few steps at a time through the heavy smoke, making their way down three flights of stairs to safety. Both were immediately transported to a nearby hospital.
While Cynthia was released shortly after, Alexander remained under observation as doctors monitored his lungs. Upon returning briefly to retrieve Alexander’s medications, Cynthia found their apartment completely destroyed. She described ankle-deep water and belongings ruined beyond recognition, with a city representative confirming four units were rendered uninhabitable.
Hope Amidst Loss
Despite the heartbreaking loss of their home and possessions, the couple is staying with family and maintaining a positive outlook. Cynthia shared with TMZ, “We are so happy to be alive. We may not have a toothbrush, but we have a car. Our spirits remain good and we are moving forward.” Alexander was released from the hospital on Friday evening.
This difficult time is compounded by the recent passing of Alexander’s longtime friend and former The Time drummer, Jellybean Johnson, in late November. Alexander was unaware of his friend’s death due to being on life support. As the couple focuses on healing and rebuilding, our thoughts are with them.
Please keep Alexander and Cynthia O’Neal in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly challenging time. Share your well wishes in the comments below!
