  • Sophomores Land 8 Interviews at AFROTECH™

Landing interviews at a major tech conference like AFROTECH™ can feel like a daunting task, especially for college sophomores. But Aishat Balogun and Esther Newton didn’t just attend AFROTECH™ 2025; they conquered it, collectively securing eight interviews! Their secret? A well-crafted roadmap and a proactive approach.

From Amazon Interns to AFROTECH™ Attendees

Aishat, an electrical engineering student at Boston University, and Esther, an industrial engineering major at Penn State, both interned at Amazon’s headquarters in Seattle during the summer of 2024. This experience, supported by the Amazon Future Engineering Scholarship Program which covered their conference expenses, fueled their desire to connect and grow within the tech industry.

Both students had heard incredible things about AFROTECH™. Esther recalled peers describing it as a “life-changing experience” for internships and networking. Aishat, inspired by her positive experience at the National Society of Black Engineers convention, was drawn to AFROTECH™’s reputation for connecting Black professionals and students with diverse passions and distinctions within their fields.

The Strategic Roadmap to 8 Interviews

Balogun and Newton attended the first three days of the conference, strategically planning their time to maximize opportunities. Their collective success wasn’t accidental; it was the result of careful planning and execution. Here’s how they did it:

    1. Forge Connections Early

    • Utilize LinkedIn to connect with attendees and recruiters *before* the conference.
    • Leverage these early connections to secure invitations to exclusive private dinners and events.
    • Network horizontally with fellow students; they can provide invaluable insights and ‘doors’ to opportunities, as Aishat discovered when a senior student shared information about hidden events.

    2. Research the Expo Hall

    • Thoroughly research companies and available positions *before* entering the expo hall.
    • Upload your resume to the conference’s talent portal (like Talent Infusion) for increased visibility.
    • Apply for jobs in advance to be more intentional with your time at the conference, focusing on asking targeted questions rather than just submitting an application.

    3. Utilize Private Application Links

    • Engage with company representatives at the conference to obtain private application links.
    • These links often lead to a separate, more closely reviewed applicant pool, increasing your chances of being noticed.

    4. Don’t Count Yourself Out

    • Even if you don’t meet every single qualification listed for a position, don’t hesitate to apply.
    • Making direct connections with recruiters and attending company events can open doors, as Aishat experienced when she was considered for a role despite not initially meeting the sophomore hiring criteria.

Their proactive approach, from pre-conference networking to targeted engagement at the event, allowed them to stand out. By preparing thoroughly and making genuine connections, Aishat and Esther demonstrated that even sophomores can make a significant impact at major industry events.
