Former NBA player Damon Jones has admitted his role in a significant gambling fraud case, becoming the first defendant to plead guilty. The charges stem from a wide-ranging investigation that has already led to over 30 arrests, implicating Jones in schemes involving both sports betting and rigged poker games.
Confession in Federal Court
Appearing in Brooklyn federal court on April 28, 2026, Jones pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. He acknowledged using non-public information, obtained through his NBA connections, to gain an unfair advantage in sports betting between December 2022 and March 2024. This included details about player injuries, which he used to place bets.
“I conspired with others to use insider information,” Jones stated in court, also offering an apology to his family, peers, and the league. His plea marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation.
The Rigged Poker Scheme
Beyond sports betting, Jones was also involved in a separate, elaborate poker scheme. Prosecutors revealed that he acted as a “face card,” using his recognizable status to lure wealthy players into exclusive, high-stakes games held in locations like Miami and the Hamptons. Court filings indicate that Jones was aware the games were rigged, employing methods such as manipulated shuffling machines and surveillance to cheat participants.
These illegal poker operations have been linked to major organized crime families, including the Gambino, Genovese, and Bonanno families. The alleged total losses from these schemes amount to over $9.5 million.
Consequences and Sentencing
Jones, who played 11 seasons in the NBA and earned over $20 million, has agreed to forfeit $73,000 as part of his plea deal. He is scheduled for sentencing in January 2027. Based on federal guidelines, he faces a potential prison sentence of 21 to 27 months for the sports betting charges and an additional 48 to 63 months for the poker scheme, though the final sentence will be decided by the court.
While Jones has pleaded guilty, the investigation continues, with prosecutors pursuing charges against the remaining defendants. None of the other individuals charged in the case have entered guilty pleas thus far.
