Well, this is certainly a conversation starter! Vice President JD Vance, who identifies as Catholic, is once again stepping in to downplay a controversial social media post from President Donald Trump. This time, it involves an AI-generated image of Trump depicted as Jesus Christ, which was later deleted.
A Pattern of Controversial Posts and Defenses
This isn’t the first time Trump has shared an AI-generated image that has ruffled feathers, especially within religious communities. Back in May 2025, following the death of Pope Francis, Trump posted an image of himself as the Pope, complete with a large gold cross necklace. This move drew sharp criticism from Catholic organizations, including the New York State Catholic Conference, who called the image mocking.
At the time, VP Vance seemed to brush off the criticism, reportedly laughing it off and stating he was fine with people telling jokes, but not with starting “stupid wars.” This pattern of downplaying controversial content seems to be continuing with the latest Jesus Christ image.
Trump’s Latest Post and Defense
The recent incident involved Trump posting an AI image of himself as Jesus Christ shortly after criticizing Pope Leo XIV on Truth Social. Pope Leo had spoken out against U.S. operations in Iran, and Trump responded with a scathing post calling the Pope “WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy.” The AI image, posted on Sunday, April 12, was deleted after facing backlash.
When questioned about the Jesus image, Trump claimed he thought it was him depicted as a doctor working with the Red Cross. He insisted that only “Fake News” would misinterpret it, stating, “It’s supposed to be me as a doctor, making people better. And I do make people better. I make people a lot better.”
Vance’s Take: It’s All in Good Fun?
VP Vance, however, is sticking to his narrative that these posts are simply jokes. Speaking with Fox News’ Bret Baier, Vance described the Jesus Christ image as a “joke” and suggested that “a lot of people weren’t understanding his humor.” He views Trump’s unfiltered social media presence as a positive trait, allowing direct communication with the public.
Vance elaborated, saying, “I think the president of the United States likes to mix it up on social media, and I actually think that’s one of the good things about this president, is that he’s not filtered. He doesn’t send everything through a communications professional. He actually reaches out directly to the people.”
This defense comes after Vance also downplayed a previous controversy involving an AI-generated image of the Obamas depicted as apes, calling it “not real controversy.” It seems Vance is consistently taking a stance that Trump’s provocative posts are misunderstood humor rather than potentially offensive content.
