In a candid conversation on Kirk Franklin’s Den of Kings YouTube show, Black revealed the emotional impact of the negative feedback. “It hurt,” he admitted, becoming visibly emotional. He explained that the commentary suggested people felt they didn’t deserve such a grand celebration, which was particularly difficult given the happiness he had found.
Black emphasized the personal significance of the moment, stating, “I’ve waited and I deserve this moment.” He shared that it took him 17 years to find this level of happiness and that he had found the love of his life in Smith. The desire to share this profound joy was met with disappointment from social media users, which diminished the celebratory atmosphere.
Celebrating Love, Their Way
The couple, who started dating in 2021 and got engaged on Christmas Day that same year, wanted their wedding to authentically reflect their journey and love. Black expressed his frustration that after meticulously planning their dream wedding, they were then subjected to harsh opinions. “I did my wedding my way. I just wanted to have a good time,” he stated.
Their wedding was a star-studded event at The Malibu Dream Resort, attended by 150 guests, including notable figures like Tyler Perry, Eva Marcille, and Loni Love. KJ Smith showcased her style with multiple outfit changes, featuring designs by Black designers, while Black sported a memorable all-white, shirtless ensemble. The reception was an extravagant party with sing-along moments and grand entrances, truly capturing the couple’s spirit.
Despite the external negativity, the couple’s focus remained on their bond and shared happiness. They are currently expecting their first child, a joyous announcement made exclusively with ESSENCE, further highlighting their beautiful journey together.
