  • Diddy’s $100M Lawsuit Over Doc Dismissed

Music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs has lost a significant legal battle concerning the documentary ‘Diddy: The Making of a Bad Boy.’ A New York judge has dismissed his $100 million defamation lawsuit against Peacock and its parent company, NBCUniversal, ruling that the film did not cause additional damage to his already tarnished reputation.

Combs had argued that the documentary promoted harmful and offensive claims about him, particularly those made by interview subjects regarding the 2018 death of his former partner, Kim Porter. His legal team described these claims as “deeply distressing, offensive, reckless and malicious.”

    Judge: Reputation Already Damaged

In her April 22 ruling, Judge Phaedra F. Perry-Bond stated that it was “inconceivable” that the documentary created any new damage to Combs’ reputation. She pointed to the numerous existing lawsuits, a domestic violence video, extensive press coverage, and a criminal indictment as factors that had already significantly impacted his public image.

The judge also noted that the documentary itself presented a nuanced view, including information that disputed the speculative claims. This included references to Kim Porter’s official autopsy findings, offering a more balanced perspective.

Filmmakers’ Victory in Protecting Free Speech

Attorneys for NBCUniversal had argued that the film presented multiple viewpoints and included responses from Combs’ representatives, effectively making it a “nuanced” piece. Theodore J. Boutrous Jr., an attorney for NBCUniversal, hailed the ruling as “important” for protecting filmmakers and journalists from “meritless” complaints.

Sean “Diddy” Combs has consistently denied allegations of sexual misconduct. He is currently serving a federal sentence, and is in the process of appealing his conviction. This legal setback adds another layer to the ongoing public scrutiny he faces.
