  • Patti LaBelle on ‘Lady Marmalade’ Meaning

It’s hard to imagine a song as iconic as “Lady Marmalade” not having its meaning crystal clear from the start, but legendary singer Patti LaBelle says that was the case for her and her group, Labelle, back in 1974. She recently shared that the true meaning of the song only became apparent after it became a massive hit.

Unveiling the Meaning of ‘Lady Marmalade’

During a candid appearance on the “IRL Angie Martinez” podcast, LaBelle revealed that she and her group were unaware of the song’s subject matter – a prostitute in New Orleans – until after it was released and climbing the charts. “Well, she’s a hooker,” LaBelle explained, clarifying the famous French lyric “Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?” translates to “Will you sleep with me tonight?”

“When we recorded this song, we had no clue what it was about until the song came out and was selling and doing really well,” she recalled. The song went on to become one of Labelle’s biggest hits, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1975.

    Backlash and Enduring Legacy

Despite its commercial success, the song’s risqué theme did generate criticism, particularly from religious audiences. LaBelle humorously recalled how nuns reacted to the song, to which she responded, “Well, they have to make a living, too. I can’t snatch the mattress from under them. They gotta do what they gotta do.”

The song gained even more popularity with a new generation when Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mýa, and Pink recorded a remake for the 2001 film “Moulin Rouge!” This cover also topped charts globally and earned a Grammy. LaBelle’s original version was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

    A Career Spanning Decades

LaBelle, now 82, continues to be celebrated for her incredible contributions to R&B and soul music over a career spanning more than six decades. “Lady Marmalade” remains one of her most recognizable and signature recordings, a true anthem of the 1970s.
