  • Thundercat’s ‘Distracted’: Navigating Grief and Modern Life

In today’s hyper-connected world, finding focus can feel like a superpower. Even Grammy-winning musician Thundercat admits that he, too, struggles with the constant barrage of information. His latest album, aptly titled ‘Distracted,’ dives headfirst into this modern condition, exploring themes of grief, dating in the digital age, and the overwhelming nature of the internet – all through his unique lens of humor and hard-earned perspective.

    Distraction as a Salve

‘Distracted’ is Thundercat’s first studio album since 2020’s ‘It Is What It Is.’ He views distractions not just as a nuisance, but as a potential coping mechanism. “Sometimes distraction can be good,” he explains, likening it to how a child might be distracted before receiving a shot. This perspective shapes the album’s approach, turning the chaos of modern life into a source of inspiration and a necessary tool for navigating each day.

During a visit to VIBE’s New York City office, Thundercat, born Stephen Bruner, sported an array of striking jewelry, joking that he sometimes needs “battle armor.” This theme of protection resonates throughout ‘Distracted,’ which delves into the modern condition while also touching upon the persistent themes of loss and grief that have long been present in his music.

    Grief, Friendship, and Musical Collaboration

His previous album, which won a Grammy for Best Progressive R&B Album, heavily featured the loss of his friend Mac Miller. ‘Distracted’ continues this exploration of grief, with a verse from Miller appearing early on the album. Thundercat also pays tribute to music executive and concert producer Meghan Stabile on the track ‘Candlelight,’ calling her “a light to me and my family.”

The album features intricate instrumentation from producer Greg Kurstin and the Grammy-nominated jazz duo DOMi & JD Beck (keyboardist DOMi Louna and drummer JD Beck). Thundercat describes their collaboration as a beautiful musical language, noting, “When you have musicianship, it’s a language. It was really beautiful coming up with that song.”

    A Kaleidoscopic Soundscape

Sonically, ‘Distracted’ builds upon the foundation of his previous work, offering a free-flowing, jazz-infused journey. Thundercat embraces a creative restlessness, finding comfort in managing multiple projects simultaneously. “The way I learned to sit comfortably with myself was that a couple of things would have to be going on at one time,” he shares.

The album showcases classic songwriting, with tracks like “What is Left to Say” evoking a vintage melody, blending funk basslines, R&B rhythms, and power-ballad synths. The project also features collaborations with Lil Yachty on “I Did This To Myself” and Kevin Parker of Tame Impala on “No More Lies,” a song born from years of mutual admiration.

Modern Romance and the Digital Maze

Thundercat tackles the challenges of modern romance and the “Male Loneliness Epidemic” with his characteristic humor. He describes the current dating landscape, heavily influenced by technology and dating apps, as a “hellscape” filled with an “illusion of options.” “It’s hard to sift through. It’s complicated, but that’s our problem to deal with,” he admits.

Released amidst a world grappling with burnout and constant online engagement, ‘Distracted’ feels remarkably relevant. Thundercat’s main message? “Sometimes it’s okay to be distracted. But [in] most situations it isn’t.” He acknowledges that while we strive for presence, those moments of distraction can sometimes be necessary breaks.
