Get ready for a visually stunning and provocative take on a literary classic! Tessa Thompson is set to mesmerize audiences as Hedda Gabler in Nia DaCosta’s reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s play, titled simply ‘Hedda’. The first look promises a smoldering portrayal of a bored newlywed whose repressed desires lead her and those around her into a spiral of manipulation and betrayal.
A Modern Take on a Classic Tragedy
Director Nia DaCosta describes Hedda as someone who wants to expose the cowardice and lies she perceives in the world around her. “She has this deepening emptiness inside of her that makes her do things she doesn’t understand—and she is living in a world that she doesn’t get,” DaCosta shared in an interview with Vanity Fair. Thompson’s casting is praised for her ability to portray characters with a hidden intensity beneath a composed exterior.
The film, set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, is already generating Oscar buzz, especially with its prominent Black lead and director. DaCosta’s vision includes an intriguing twist: Hedda’s former flame, who is also her husband’s rival for a teaching position, has been reimagined as a woman, adding another layer to the power dynamics and struggles faced by the female characters.
A Powerful Collaboration
DaCosta, known for her work on ‘Candyman,’ ‘Little Woods,’ and ‘The Marvels,’ brings her distinctive directorial style to this adaptation. She noted that changing the ex-flame to a woman “made it more potent, more powerful, and also more unfortunately tragic,” highlighting the additional societal barriers these women navigate.
The film also features a talented cast, including Imogen Poots, Tom Bateman, Nicholas Pinnock, and Nina Hoss. ‘Hedda’ is slated for a limited theatrical release on October 22, followed by a premiere on Prime Video on October 29.
