  • Foundation Seeks Aid to Rebuild Jamaica School After Hurricane Melissa

The devastating impact of Category 5 Hurricane Melissa, the strongest storm ever recorded to hit Jamaica, has left many communities in need of support. Among those hardest hit is the Sav Inclusive School, a vital educational institution that has suffered severe damage. Now, a New York-based nonprofit is stepping up to help rebuild this crucial learning environment.

    The Rockhouse Foundation’s Recovery Efforts

The Rockhouse Foundation, dedicated to enhancing education in Jamaica, has launched the Rockhouse Foundation Hurricane Recovery Fund. This initiative aims to rally support for the Sav Inclusive School, which provides a fully inclusive learning environment for 265 students with disabilities, ranging from ages 3 to grade 6. The storm’s landfall, less than ten miles from the school’s campus, resulted in catastrophic damage.

According to the organization’s GoFundMe page, “Roofs were torn off, classrooms flooded, therapy rooms and learning materials destroyed, and our grounds left badly damaged.” The foundation emphasizes that “every act of kindness brings us closer to reopening our doors and continuing to change young lives through inclusion, love, and learning.”

    Expanding Opportunities for Students

The recovery fund will not only address the immediate repair needs but also contribute to broader community recovery efforts. The Sav Inclusive School is a testament to the foundation’s commitment to inclusive education, with plans already in motion, in partnership with Jamaica’s Ministry of Education, to expand the school through the 12th grade over the next seven years. This expansion aims to provide continuous educational opportunities for students.

Since its launch in 2004, The Rockhouse Foundation has invested over $11 million in building schools across Jamaica. The Sav Inclusive School is one of six educational facilities established by the organization, including Moreland Hill Primary School, Little Bay All Age and Infant School, and the Negril Public Library. The foundation operates as both a registered Jamaican charity and a New York–based 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

    How You Can Help

The Rockhouse Foundation is calling on individuals and organizations to contribute to their hurricane relief efforts. By supporting the Rockhouse Foundation Hurricane Recovery Fund, you can directly help rebuild the Sav Inclusive School and support the surrounding community’s recovery. Donations can be made through their GoFundMe page or via the Rockhouse Foundation’s website.

  • Support Resources for Families During SNAP Benefits Pause

A potential government shutdown could leave nearly 42 million Americans without access to SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits starting November 1st. This federal program is a lifeline for families, veterans, seniors, and individuals with disabilities, helping them afford essential groceries. The interruption could force many vulnerable households into food insecurity, making it difficult to prioritize food amidst other critical expenses like rent and utilities.

Making Every Dollar Count: Budget-Friendly Tips

In times of financial strain, resourcefulness is key. Food writer Stephanie Gravalese advises taking stock of your pantry and planning meals around sale items. Focusing on versatile staples like beans and rice can stretch your budget further, as these ingredients can be used in numerous dishes. If you still have funds on your SNAP card, look for stores that offer matching or double benefits.

Chef Nikkie Miller-Ka echoes this sentiment, recommending budget-friendly staples such as rice, beans, potatoes, and pasta. These affordable ingredients can form the base of delicious, filling meals, especially when combined with frozen vegetables and canned goods. Preparing larger quantities can also help ensure multiple servings, maximizing your resources.

    Community Support and Neighborly Help

Historically, community has been our greatest asset during challenging times. Online forums are buzzing with ideas like reviving bartering systems, establishing community gardens, and donating to community fridges or free little pantries. These grassroots efforts highlight the power of neighbors supporting neighbors.

United Way president and CEO Angela Williams emphasizes that local United Way chapters are hearing from families facing fear and financial strain. “When people lose their safety net, they turn to their neighbors and local nonprofits that hold our communities together,” she stated. United Way’s hotline, 211, connects individuals with trained specialists who can assess needs and direct them to resources like emergency food, rent assistance, and mental health support.

    Additional Resources and Assistance Programs

Several organizations are stepping up to bridge the gap during the SNAP pause. DoorDash is waiving delivery and service fees on 300,000 grocery orders for SNAP recipients who link their EBT card. Max Rettig, vice president at DoorDash, stated, “No one should go hungry in America – period.”

Instacart is offering 50% off grocery orders for customers who used a SNAP/EBT card in October and is tripling its donations to over 300 food banks nationwide. In Philadelphia, The Sunday Love Project & Greater Goods offers free groceries, while KRVC in Riverdale, New York, provides free produce. Jasmine Crowe-Houston’s Goodr combats food waste by distributing high-quality food through Pop-Up Grocery Markets and delivery services.

For individuals with disabilities, New Disabled South is providing one-time payments of $100 for individuals and $250 for households. The Me Little Me Foundation offers a virtual pantry service, delivering groceries free of charge to marginalized BIPOC communities, addressing transportation barriers and ensuring accessibility.
