In a surprising turn of events, Kim Kardashian’s popular shapewear brand, SKIMS, has found itself linked to a significant drug bust in England. However, the company is vehemently denying any knowledge or involvement in the criminal activity.
The Cocaine Smuggling Operation
The situation came to light following the sentencing of Jakub Jan Konkel, a convicted drug trafficker, in Chelmsford Crown Court. Authorities revealed that Konkel was involved in transporting a trailer truck carrying 28 pallets of SKIMS clothing from the Netherlands to England last September. This shipment was later searched by Border Force officers upon arrival at the Port of Harwich.
During the search, officers discovered approximately 90 hidden packages of cocaine concealed near the rear trailer doors. The estimated street value of the seized drugs is a staggering $9.4 million. While the SKIMS merchandise was used as a cover for the illicit substances, officials have stressed that the clothing itself was not illegal.
SKIMS Issues a Strong Denial
A representative for SKIMS quickly addressed the news, issuing a clear statement to TMZ. “SKIMS is aware of the recent news involving a shipment with our products,” the statement read. “We want to be absolutely clear: SKIMS had no knowledge whatsoever about this criminal activity. We had no connection to the smuggling operation, the driver, or the truck.”
The brand emphasized its complete lack of involvement, distancing itself from the driver and the illegal operation. This denial aims to reassure the public and maintain the brand’s reputation amidst the concerning news.
The Driver’s Plea
Initially, Konkel denied any knowledge of the drugs. However, he later admitted to agreeing to smuggle the cocaine in exchange for a payment of approximately $5,300, before ultimately pleading guilty in court. His sentence of 13 years and 6 months reflects the severity of his actions.
