The hip-hop world is buzzing, and not necessarily in a good way for Drake, following his recent lawsuit against UMG. Many, including West Coast MC Glasses Malone, have been critical of the move, and Malone is now taking his commentary to the next level with his latest music video.
A Courtroom Roast
Glasses Malone, who has been vocal about his stance against Drake since the rap battle with Kendrick Lamar, dropped a new song titled “Wanted.” The accompanying music video is a masterclass in trolling, set entirely within a courtroom. It cleverly uses the legal setting to poke fun at Drake’s ongoing legal battle with his parent label, Universal Music Group (UMG).
The video features a news reporter interrupting the proceedings to announce breaking news: “The prosecution star witness Drake is scheduled to take the stand… the first rapper ever to sue ’cause he lost a rap battle.” This jab directly references the lawsuit where Drake accuses UMG of artificially boosting the popularity of Kendrick Lamar’s diss track, “Not Like Us.”
Drake’s Controversial Lawsuit
Drake’s decision to sue UMG for defamation, claiming they artificially inflated the success of “Not Like Us,” has been met with widespread ridicule. While his fans argue that being called a “certified pedophile” justifies legal action, many in the hip-hop community view it as a sore loser move. This ongoing feud has led to constant back-and-forth, with Drake himself engaging in online debates.
Just recently, Drake got into a public spat with hip-hop journalist Rob Markman, commenting on an old clip of Markman reciting Lil Wayne lyrics. Markman fired back, humorously suggesting Drake would sue him if he started calling him names. This exchange, along with Malone’s video, highlights the public’s reaction to Drake’s legal maneuvers.
Cameos and Commentary
The “Wanted” music video doesn’t stop at the news report. It features a fake Drake taking the stand, much to the delight of fans in the comments section who found the roast hilarious. Adding to the authenticity, independent court reporter Meghann Cuniff and hip-hop podcaster Justin “The Company Man” Hunte make cameo appearances, further blurring the lines between music video and commentary.
