Things got heated outside the ring for boxing superstar Claressa Shields this past weekend. Following a physical altercation with rival Alycia Baumgardner at MVP MMA 1 in Los Angeles, Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) has issued an immediate ban on Shields from all future events.
The Incident and MVP’s Response
The incident occurred in a VIP section at the Intuit Dome, where a video circulating online showed Shields and Baumgardner arguing. Reports indicate that Shields slapped Baumgardner’s hand after Baumgardner allegedly threatened her. MVP released a statement on X on Monday, May 19th, confirming the ban and emphasizing their stance on athlete conduct.
“Effective immediately, Claressa Shields is banned from all MVP events until further notice,” the promotion stated. They highlighted that while fighter tension is expected, physically attacking another athlete as a guest in a private area is unacceptable. MVP also reiterated its strict zero-tolerance policy for any hostile or aggressive behavior at their events, whether directed at fighters, staff, media, or guests.
Differing Accounts of the Altercation
Both fighters have taken to social media to share their perspectives. Shields claimed Baumgardner was verbally aggressive, while Baumgardner described the incident as “unprovoked” and stated she was “physically assaulted without provocation.” Baumgardner also indicated that the matter is being handled legally and professionally.
Shields, known as the “GWOAT” (Greatest Woman Of All Time), posted her own thoughts, suggesting she would continue to stand her ground respectfully. The situation underscores the fine line between competitive rivalry and unacceptable behavior, especially in public settings.
