Are you a gamer who’s always been told you spend too much time in front of a screen? Well, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) might just have the perfect career opportunity for you! Facing a national shortage of air traffic controllers, these agencies are launching an innovative campaign specifically targeting video game enthusiasts.
Why Gamers Are a Perfect Fit
Launched on April 10th, this campaign highlights how the skills honed through gaming are surprisingly transferable to the high-stakes world of air traffic control. The DOT points to gamers’ “demonstrated high cognitive functions, multitasking, spatial awareness, strategy, and problem-solving” as key assets. Many current air traffic controllers have even reported in exit interviews that their gaming experience helped them think quickly, stay focused, and manage complex situations.
With approximately 65% of Americans regularly playing video games, the DOT sees a vast pool of untapped potential. A promotional video accompanying the campaign directly addresses gamers, asking, “Are you up for the challenge? You’ve been training for this… Become an air traffic controller [supercharged hiring]. It’s not a game, it’s a career.” The video emphasizes the rewarding aspects of the job, including keeping millions safe daily and earning a substantial income, with an average annual salary reaching $155,000 after three years.
The Path to Becoming a Controller
The FAA is using gamer-friendly language to attract applicants, promising access to “the world’s most advanced air traffic technology” and “legendary benefits” for those who complete “the quest to certification.” The hiring window opens on April 17th. Becoming a U.S. air traffic controller involves a five-step process: submitting an application, passing an aptitude exam, obtaining medical and security clearances, completing academy training, and gaining up to three years of on-the-job experience.
Notably, a completed college degree is not a requirement to apply. During training, individuals receive health and housing benefits, along with an hourly pay starting at $22.61. DOT Secretary Sean P. Duffy highlighted the campaign’s innovative approach, stating, “To reach the next generation of air traffic controllers, we need to adapt. This campaign’s innovative communication style and focus on gaming taps into a growing demographic of young adults who have many of the hard skills it takes to be a successful controller.”
Competitive Salaries and Essential Role
The median annual wage for air traffic controllers was $144,580 in May 2024, significantly higher than the median annual wage for all workers, which was $49,500. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford emphasized the importance of hiring top talent, stating, “Safety is the FAA’s top priority, and that starts with hiring top talent and equipping them with world-class tools.” This initiative aims to ensure the best people are in place, equipped with the best training and tools, to achieve the best results in keeping the skies safe.
