Get ready for a major shake-up in the digital media landscape! Media mogul Byron Allen is significantly expanding his already vast empire by acquiring a majority stake in BuzzFeed Inc. for a whopping $120 million. This isn’t just an investment; Allen is also stepping into the role of chairman and CEO, signaling a new era for the company.
A New Chapter for BuzzFeed
The deal, facilitated through Allen Family Digital, is expected to close by the end of May 2026, pending standard conditions. As part of the transition, current CEO Jonah Peretti will move into a newly created position focused on AI, specifically as president of BuzzFeed AI. This move highlights the growing importance of artificial intelligence in the media industry.
Allen expressed his admiration for Peretti’s vision, stating, “Jonah is a great visionary and has done a phenomenal job. BuzzFeed and HuffPost have become two iconic global digital media brands with powerful audience reach and strong cultural importance.” Allen plans to build upon this foundation by expanding into free-streaming video, audio, and user-generated content, aiming to make BuzzFeed a premier free video streaming service, directly competing with platforms like YouTube.
The Financials and Allen’s Vision
Under the terms of the agreement, Allen Family Digital will purchase 40 million shares of BuzzFeed stock at $3 per share. This acquisition will result in Allen Family Digital owning approximately 52% of the company’s outstanding shares. The $120 million purchase price includes $20 million in cash at closing and a $100 million promissory note due in five years, with a 5% annual interest rate.
Byron Allen, who founded Entertainment Studios (now Allen Media Group) in 1993, has built an impressive media empire. His portfolio boasts numerous streaming platforms, apps, broadcast television stations, and 10 24-hour HD networks, including The Weather Channel and TheGrio. He’s also a major independent producer and distributor of syndicated television programming.
Jonah Peretti’s New Focus on AI
Jonah Peretti, who co-founded BuzzFeed in 2006 and led it through its public debut in 2021, is enthusiastic about his new role. “After 20 years as CEO of BuzzFeed, I’m excited to switch my focus to a more hands-on role developing products and technology that are only possible because of recent advances in AI,” Peretti stated. He believes AI will revolutionize the media industry and is eager to explore its potential for creative empowerment.
Peretti also anticipates significant changes at BuzzFeed, including cost reductions and the launch of BuzzFeed Studios, which will concentrate on various forms of digital content, from micro-dramas to premium productions. He expressed confidence that Allen’s leadership and industry connections will usher in a new era of growth for BuzzFeed and HuffPost.
