  • Amazon Employees Challenge AI Push, Cite Climate & Job Risks

It seems not everyone at Amazon is on board with the company’s ambitious pivot towards artificial intelligence. A significant group of employees is speaking out, penning an open letter to CEO Andy Jassy and senior leadership to voice serious concerns about the aggressive AI push. Their worries? The potential for staggering damage to democracy, jobs, and, crucially, the planet.

    Climate Commitments vs. AI Investments

The core of the employees’ argument is that Amazon appears to be sidelining its climate goals in favor of rapid AI development. The letter points out that the company’s annual emissions have surged by approximately 35% since 2019, despite a pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040. This gap, they argue, is widening due to the intense focus on AI.

The scale of investment is staggering: Amazon plans to spend $150 billion on new AI data centers. Many of these are slated for “drought-stressed regions,” raising concerns about straining already limited water supplies. Furthermore, the immense power demands of these centers could force local utilities to keep coal plants operational or even build new gas plants, directly contradicting sustainability efforts.

    Workforce Impact and AI’s Role

The open letter, signed by over 1,000 Amazon employees and more than 2,000 external supporters, also highlights the pressure employees face to adopt new AI tools. This comes at a time when CEO Andy Jassy has openly discussed plans to shrink the human workforce, replacing roles with AI-driven “agents.” This follows a significant announcement in October 2025 regarding the layoff of roughly 14,000 employees.

Employees who remain after recent layoffs report being asked to handle increased workloads in less time, develop what they deem “wasteful” AI tools, and witness massive investments in technology that could ultimately replace them. The letter criticizes the lack of support for career development amidst this AI-driven transformation.

    Concerns About Surveillance and Authoritarianism

Beyond environmental and job security worries, the employees’ letter accuses Amazon of contributing to a “more militarized surveillance state.” They point to features like Ring’s video footage requests from users and the use of AI to monitor warehouse workers as examples. The letter also notes shifts in company policy, including reduced diversity and inclusion commitments, which employees feel align with an agenda to end “wokeness.”

The fear is that these collaborations and policy shifts are ceding significant power to an “increasingly authoritarian government” and a few corporations prioritizing AI dominance over ethical principles. “If these collaborations continue, we will be ceding an unbelievable amount of power into the hands of an increasingly authoritarian government and a few companies willing to abandon any principles they claim to have in the race for AI dominance,” the letter states.

    What Amazon Employees Are Demanding

The employees have laid out clear demands: Amazon must publish a plan to power all its data centers with renewable energy, cease custom AI projects for oil and gas drilling, and release a science-backed report on how it will meet its climate commitments. They also call for ethical AI working groups with real authority and a pledge against using AI for surveillance, warfare, or mass deportation.

Ultimately, the signatories believe in building a better world, not just advancing technology for its own sake. They envision AI’s benefits leading to more freedom, rest, time with loved ones, and safety for individuals. “It’s time for us to step up and spark a conversation about the real benefits and costs of AI,’” the letter concludes. “The choices we make now, for the planet, for its people and animals, matter more than ever. Let’s make ones we can be proud of.”
