In a significant development for the beauty industry, a recent Consumer Reports study has highlighted a critical issue: the presence of harmful contaminants in popular braiding and human hair products. The findings are concerning, but one brand is emerging as a beacon of safety and transparency – Dosso Beauty.
Dosso Beauty: The Sole Brand Clearing Heavy Metal Tests
Following up on a 2025 study that found carcinogens in 100% of tested braiding hair, a new report examined human hair and synthetic alternatives. The results were stark: only Dosso Beauty tested negative for heavy metals. Alarmingly, all other brands included in the study contained volatile organic compounds (VOCs), toxins linked to serious health issues like cancer and respiratory problems.
Kadidja Dosso, the founder of Dosso Beauty, expressed a mix of gratitude and concern upon hearing the news. “We’ve spent years working on independent clinical trials and providing education to our consumers about the benefits of using our products, and this news gave me a great deal of gratitude because all of the hard work that we’ve put in has not gone unnoticed,” Dosso told HelloBeautiful. “What also scares me about the fact that we were the only brand that tested negative for heavy metals is how much more harm 99% of the hair extensions in the market are causing millions of women around the world.”
A Call for Industry-Wide Change
Dosso Beauty’s commitment to safety is evident in their rigorous testing protocols. “We work with our manufacturer to conduct third-party testing to confirm that our products are free of heavy metals bi-annually, in line with our testing schedule,” Dosso explained. She emphasized the need for stronger industry regulation and transparency, noting that while Dosso Beauty has cleared testing, the presence of VOCs in other products points to a larger, unresolved issue.
Dosso is actively involved in the Beauty Justice Act coalition, working with brands, organizations, and individuals to raise awareness about product safety. She urges other brands to take proactive steps: “Brands must conduct their own trials to ensure that their products are safe for their consumers. And if the results show that they are not safe, it is their duty to acknowledge the results and inform consumers of their next steps to rectify it.”
Setting a Standard for Efficacy and Transparency
Prior to the Consumer Reports study, Dosso Beauty had already conducted its own clinical trials and published the results online, prioritizing efficacy and transparency. Their proactive approach sets a high standard for the industry, demonstrating that product safety and consumer well-being should be paramount. The message is clear: it’s time for other brands to follow suit and ensure the products they offer are truly safe for their customers.
