In a world that often feels heavy, finding stories that offer hope and joy is more important than ever. That’s exactly the sentiment behind the new romantic comedy, ‘You, Me & Tuscany,’ according to its acclaimed producer, Will Packer. He recently shared his vision for the film, emphasizing its focus on heartfelt Black love and community, with a refreshing absence of trauma.
A Celebration of Joyful Black Love
Speaking on the red carpet at the film’s vibrant New York premiere, Packer described ‘You, Me & Tuscany’ as a movie that is ‘hopeful’ and ‘about joy.’ He believes that in today’s climate, audiences desperately need a romantic comedy that delivers on its promise, offering a much-needed escape and a reminder of love’s power.
The film stars Halle Bailey as Anna, a culinary school dropout navigating her twenties, and Regé-Jean Page as Michael, the cousin who runs a vineyard in Tuscany. Their paths cross unexpectedly, leading to a blossoming romance amidst an Italian family drama. It’s a classic rom-com setup, but with a focus on positive representation.
Community and the Big Screen Experience
Packer highlighted the importance of community, especially during challenging times. He hopes ‘You, Me & Tuscany’ will encourage people to come together in theaters, experiencing the magic of cinema collectively. ‘This is all about the big screen,’ Packer urged, pushing back against the idea of waiting for streaming releases. ‘Sit in the dark theater, sit with somebody… And fall in love with the concept of love again.’
The film’s picturesque setting in Tuscany and Rome, shot entirely on location, adds to its appeal, offering viewers a sense of wanderlust and the joy of travel, particularly the experience of Black individuals exploring the world.
Breaking the Mold: Black Love Without Trauma
Packer, known for films like ‘Think Like a Man’ and ‘Girls Trip,’ has consistently explored love in its various forms. However, ‘You, Me & Tuscany’ stands out by placing a young Black woman at the center of a European rom-com, a narrative often underrepresented on the big screen. This approach offers a refreshing alternative to the heavy discussions about Black relationships often found online.
Healthy Black love is true, it’s honest, it is not pretentious, and it’s transparent about what it wants and what it’s looking for. That is healthy Black love. No trauma needed. — Will Packer
The film successfully blends humor, emotion, and captivating visuals, making it a delightful watch. Packer credits his foundation from attending an HBCU, Florida A&M University, for giving him the confidence to create central characters and be the ‘main character of his own life.’
